Road Work on Belmont St. Will Impact Some Watertown Residents

The following information was provided by the Watertown Department of Public Works:

As part of the Belmont Street Reconstruction Project, the City of Cambridge’s contractor, Newport Construction, will begin mobilizing in the coming weeks

Newport will begin installing tree protection along the street, performing survey and layout work, saw-cutting areas of the roadway and delivering and install of drainage structures. DigSafe markings will also begin appearing on the sidewalk and roadways. Following drainage work, weather permitting, Newport will begin the installation of the Cambridge water main along Belmont Street between the Belmont Town Line and Mt. Auburn Street. Cambridge residents of Belmont Street will receive a notice with specific details regarding this work.

Work on Temporary High School Campus at Moxley Field Beginning Soon, Community Meeting Planned

Watertown will be building a new high school building that will be located on the same property as the current school. While the new building is constructed, the school will move to a temporary campus to be located next to Watertown Middle School on the grassy area of Moxley Field. The following information was provided by the Compass Project Management, the consultant hired by the School Building Committee for the Watertown High School project:

We have a very exciting progress update for the Moxley Modular High School Project which is on schedule to start in earnest next week.

See When Watertown’s Winter Parking Ban Will Begin

The City of Watertown announced the dates of the Winter Parking Ban, see the announcement below:

Effective Monday, Nov. 28, 2022 and continuing to April 1, 2023 the Winter Parking Ban will be in effect and strictly enforced. The regulation reads in part; “No vehicle may remain on any public way for more than one hour between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. all days of the week”. For residents who lack sufficient off-street parking, the City allows for temporary parking at any municipal parking lot and other locations noted:

The police station at 552 Main St. (visitor’s parking lot only)

Any public school parking lot

 Victory Field parking lot

 O’Connell Park, 341 Mt.

Watertown Rolls Past Dover-Sherborn into Field Hockey State Final

CANTON — Watertown High School’s field hockey team defeated Dover-Sherborn 6-0 Wednesday night to set up a rematch in the MIAA Div. 3 State Final on Saturday. The top-seeded Raiders held a 2-0 lead over fourth-seeded Dover-Sherborn at halftime after goals by junior Molly Driscoll in the first quarter and sophomore Caroline Andrade in the second. Watertown came out in the second half going at 100 miles per hour.

Watertown Police Catch Pair of Men with “Ghost Gun”

Watertown Police DepartmentThe “ghost gun” recovered by Watertown Police during a traffic stop. The Watertown Police confiscated a “ghost gun” along with a high-capacity magazine and other items during and arrest made after making a traffic stop on Sunday, Nov. 13. Denis Amaral De Abreau, 20, of Boston, was pulled over after officers stopped his vehicle for speeding at 1:35 a.m. on Nov. 13.

Watertown Community Fridge Preparing for Thanksgiving

The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Community Fridge:

The Fridge coordinating team has been planning for the change of seasons and all the Holidays it brings! We are hoping to have a full fridge in the week leading up to Thanksgiving, and we appreciate any donations you can offer. Any monetary donations will go towards large fridge shops for Thanksgiving food, produce, and pantry items. You can donate via Venmo (@WatertownCommunityFridge), PayPal, or check. 

As always, we need volunteers to ensure that the fridge is clean and donations follow guidelines twice per day. The Volunteer Sign Up is updated every Sunday with additional slots.

Watertown BioSafety Committee Shares How it Oversees Life Science Companies

Watertown has more than 60 life science companies, and more on the way, and they must go through the Watertown BioSafety Committee before they can start operating. Last week, the City Council got an update on what the committee has been doing in its first 2.5 years. The BioSafety Committee was formed as part of the Watertown Biotechnology Regulation, which was adopted by the Watertown Board of Health in 2019 and took effect in July 2020. Existing companies had to come before the BioSafety Committee within a year of the regulations taking effect, and new companies had to come before the committee.

A Pair of Watertown Field Hockey Players Sign Letters to Play at Division I Colleges

Charlie BreitroseWatertown High School seniors Lizzie Loftus, left, and Maggie Driscoll signed letters of intent to play college field hockey. For many years, well before they became members of the Watertown High School field hockey team, Maggie Driscoll and Lizzie Loftus grew up playing the game with one another. Last Friday, they continued their journey together by signing letters of intent to play in college. While both will be at NCAA Div. I programs, Loftus is headed to Brown, and Driscoll will play at Boston University.
