Watertown Renegotiating Contract for BlueBikes, Looks to Get More Beneficial Deal

Arsenal YardsThe Bluebikes station outside Arsenal Yards. With Watertown’s contract with the Bluebikes bicycle share company expiring, City officials hope to sign a more favorable agreement. The contract ends in early 2026, and City Manager George Proakis told the City Council he hopes to sign a several year agreement. “This particular contract is a five year agreement with two optional two year renewals for a maximum term of nine years, which is designed to enhance service delivery, strengthen the sponsorship system, to make the system work better and support continued operations and stability in the bikeshare system here in Watertown,” Proakis said. Because the contract is longer than three years, the City Council had to vote to allow the City staff to enter into an agreement.

City Receives MassDOT Grant to Expand Bluebikes in Watertown

Great news – the City of Watertown has won a Shared Streets and Spaces Fiscal Year 2024 Funding Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) that will help pay for operations costs for Bluebikes! This grant will help Watertown fund our public bikeshare system (Bluebikes) to continue to be a resource for the region for years to come. The grant will compliment a system expansion that will serve more people and, in more areas not currently served by the existing system. It will boost our bikeshare system (Bluebikes) in providing more and better connections to the MBTA transit system, so Watertown’s residents & visitors can hop on & off a bike to get closer to their destination or home. Bluebikes is a bedrock of our environmentally-sustainable goals, and this grant will help make our investments in Bluebikes to be more financially sustainable, with a new avenue of funding unlocked.

Watertown Looks to Lease Electric Shuttles for Pleasant Street Connector

Watertown TMAThe Watertown Connector started running the week of Labor Day. The shuttle goes down Pleasant Street to Watertown Square and then heads to Harvard Square. It is open to the general public. The City of Watertown wants to go green by seeking funds for two electric vehicles for the recently launched shuttle running from the Westside to Harvard Square. The Council recently signed a letter requesting a three-year grant through the Community Connections program run by MassDOT to lease two battery-powered vehicles to replace the one gas-powered shuttle currently being operated.

MassDOT Grant Funds Watertown Bluebike Station, Other Improvements

A Bluebike station in Watertown Square was paid for by a state grant. Watertown received a grant from the Mass. Department of Transportation to build a Bluebike station in Watertown Square and make other road and sidewalk improvements. The $280,218 grant was part of the third round of the Baker-Polito Administration’s Shared Winter Streets and Spaces program. The bike share station is next to the entrance to the Charles River Path in Watertown Square.

Bluebikes Offering Free Rides on Election Day

The Bluebikes station in Coolidge Square in East Watertown. Bluebikes will offer free rides for people on election day. The bicycle share company expanded into Watertown in August, and four of the seven planned stations have been installed. The most recent addition was the station on Arsenal Street next to Arsenal Yards and across from the Target in the Watertown Mall. The Town of Watertown provided the following information:

Bluebikes recently launched four new stations in Watertown, with three more to come. To provide a socially distant and easy transportation option for voters across metro Boston as they head to the polls, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will offer free Bluebikes rides on Election Day, Tuesday Nov.

Bluebikes Opens New Station at Arsenal Yards, Officials Say Bike Share Has Had a Good Start

The recently installed BlueBike station outside Arsenal Yards. Bikeshare company Lyft Bluebikes opened its latest docking station at Arsenal Yards with some fanfare last week. It is the fourth in Watertown with three more planned, and Town officials say they have already drawn a lot of interest. The first Bluebike station in Watertown opened in August, as part of a five community expansion, which also included Newton and Arlington. Three of the Town’s stations in are on public land, but four will be located on private property, said Laura Wiener, Watertown’s Transportation Planner.

Watertown Receives a Gift of BlueBike Stations

Watertown will be getting seven Bluebike stations, with the first few already installed. Watertown received more than $200,000 in gifts to establish BlueBike rental stations in town. The move was made so that the Town did not have to own the bicycles or be responsible for the upkeep. The Town of Watertown received a gift of $224,257.06 worth of items to install six BlueBike Stations with 38 bicycles to be rented. The items were donated by MetroFuture Inc., a non-profit charitable organization, said Town Manager Michael Driscoll.

7 Bluebike Stations Being Installed in Watertown

Watertown will be getting seven Bluebike stations, with the first few being installed in early August. The first few of the seven Bluebike stations coming to Watertown will be installed with in the next few days. Steve Magoon, Assistant Town Manager and Director of Community Development and Planning, welcomed Bluebike’s expansion into town. “This is an exciting opportunity to bring bike share to Watertown, and provide connections to the other communities and to the T, with a consistent program throughout the region,” Magoon said. “The experience for the public will be seamless and much more functional.”

Watertown Transportation Planner Laura Wiener said the first station is due to be installed in Coolidge Square on Friday, July 31.
