Watertown Soccer Player Will Continue His Athletic Career in College

Watertown High School AthleticsWatertown’s Nick DiPace signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Emmanuel College. Recent Watertown High School graduate Nick DiPace had a small celebration before graduation where he signed a letter of intent to play soccer in college. Next year, DiPace will play on the Emmanuel College soccer team. “It’s amazing that I get to continue playing soccer in college,” he said. “Soccer has really opened up a lot of opportunities for me, for example getting to meet new people who also love the game of soccer.”

Eleven Watertown High School athletes from five teams made the Middlesex All-Stars during the 2020 Fall Season. Teams played shortened seasons this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and three fall sports — football, girls volleyball and girls swimming — were postponed. Girls Cross Country: Anna Lonergan

Football and girls volleyball will be held during the MIAA’s Fall II Season, due to begin in February. Watertown school officials decided to not hold swimming this year because the program is a coop one with Arlington, which would have required students from both schools mixing each day, according to an Athletics Subcommittee report at the Watertown School Committee. Athletes can register now for the Winter Season, which includes boys and girls basketball and boys and girls hockey.

Three Watertown Soccer Players Make All-Stars, One Garners Eastern Mass Honors

Watertown senior Nick DiPace made the Middlesex Boys Soccer All-Stars and the Eastern Mass. All-Star team. The Middlesex League boys soccer teams featured some of the top high school players in the State, and three Watertown Raiders made the All-Star list plus one also received Eastern Massachusetts honors. Watertown seniors Nicholas DiPace, Caiden Kiana and Kenan Canca made the 2020 Middlesex League Small School All-Star team. The Raiders finished 4-3-1 in the season that was shortened due to COVID-19.

The abbreviated fall high school sports, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, started this week when the Watertown High School golf team took on Wilmington, and other teams will be debuting this weekend. Six fall sports teams will be competing this year: boys and girls cross country, field hockey, boys and girls soccer and golf. Meanwhile, the football, volleyball, swimming and cheerleading teams will wait until “Fall II” which begins in February. Most of the teams will have 10 competitions. The boys and girls cross country teams will have five apiece.

Watertown High School’s field hockey team, and other sports, will soon start their fall season, but with several changes due to COVID-19. Weekend games, reduced schedules and very limited fans — these are just some of the changes in store for Watertown High School athletes this fall. Last week, the School Committee approved the plans for holding high school sports during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most Watertown High School fall sports teams will be getting ready for their season to begin in late September. Outdoor sports, except for football, will compete this fall.

High School Sports to Look Much Different During 2020-21

The Raiders celebrate a first quarter touchdown against Burlington at Victory Field. Many details remain up in the air for high school sports this school year, but some things are already clear: there will be no Thanksgiving Day football game and no field hockey state championship for Watertown this year. The COVID-19 pandemic will have a great impact on Massachusetts high school sports, particularly on the fall season, which will have no state tournaments in 2020 (tourneys in other seasons have not been decided yet). Also, the football season will be delayed until early 2021. The MIAA announced those and other details about high school sports last week.

Town Council Discussing Filippello Park Lighting Tuesday, See How to Watch & Participate

The Town Council will likely vote Tuesday on the proposed lighting project at Filippello Park. The plan calls for installing new lights at the field near Arlington Street (on the left), and replacing the lights on the Grove Street Field (in the middle of the map, marked “Softball” and “Soccer”). The Town Council will meet virtually Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and are scheduled to have a public hearing and vote on the lighting project at Filippello Park. The Recreation Department has proposed putting up new lights at the Arlington Street Field at the park on the Eastside of town, and replace the lights at the softball field closer to the Grove Street side of the park. A new scoreboard will also be installed.
