Hear from Those Running for Council, School Committee at 2 Candidate Forums

Watertown News and Watertown Cable Access will host a pair of candidate forums featuring the people running for Town Councilor At-Large and School Committee in the Town Election. The forums will be held in the Watertown Savings Bank Room at the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main Street, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and will also be broadcast live on Watertown Cable. The forums will be rebroadcast on later dates. The first forum will be on Thursday, Oct. 12, and it will include the six candidates for the four-year School Committee seats.

Residents of Watertown are invited to come check out Watertown’s own cable access station to take a tour of the studio and learn about workshops and volunteer opportunities, WCA-TV announced. Bill in Legislature Would Improve Local Cable Quality, Make Listings Easier to Use

The State Legislature is considering a bill to support community access television and provide high-definition programing and include detailed listings on the cable guides. 

The bill, known as “An Act supporting community access television,” is bill S.1857 in the Senate and H.2682 in the House of Representatives. Helen Chatel, executive director of Watertown Cable Access, said that currently when you look up WCA-TV’s three channels the cable guide programs are listed as “community, eduction or government access.” “This is useless to cable subscribers looking for the latest showing of town council or school committee,” Chatel said. “Imagine, how convenient it would be to know that your local cable access is airing a Special Town Council meeting, or a budget hearing live.” It would also be easier to find when a locally-produced show or a high school sporting event will air.

Cable Show Will Tell the Story of One of Watertown’s Fallen Veterans

For years, Bob Kaprielian has been interviewing Watertown’s veterans to find out about the stories of serving in the United States military, but his latest episode of A Veteran’s Story will be different because it focuses on one of the town’s fallen heroes. Kaprielian interviewed family members, friends and those who were impacted by Lt. Paul Sullivan, who died in action in Vietnam on Aug. 9, 1968. Sullivan went into the Army Rangers and he trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, before being shipped to Vietnam. He arrived during some of the fiercest fighting of the Vietnam War.

New Local Cable Show Puts Spotlight on Groups Making a Difference in Watertown

A new show debuted on Watertown Cable on Thursday called Inside Watertown hosted by longtime local business and community leader Paul Airasian and your’s truly, Charlie Breitrose, editor of Watertown News. Paul and I have worked together a number of times beginning when I was editor of Watertown Patch and he was hosting Watertown Business Report on WCA-TV. That collaboration has continued, most recently when I helped in the offices of the Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce during Paul’s time as executive director. When he moved on from the chamber, we looked around for other ways to work together and he came up with the idea of a local cable show. I had been a guest on Paul’s previous show, but we wanted to look at Watertown from a broader perspective.

Watertown Man Celebrates 25 Years Producing ‘Drawing With Fred’ on Cable

Since 1992 Watertown resident, Fred M. Grandinetti, has been the producer, writer and host of the award winning cable access series Drawing With Fred, the producer said. The show’s format has remained pretty constant over the years. It begins with a drawing lesson followed by an animated cartoon featuring the object of instruction. The show is rounded off with more cartoons plus original water safety and fitness segments. Popeye, Betty Boop, Sinbad Jr., Snuffy Smith, Barney Google, Krazy Kat, Beetle Bailey and Cool McCool are among the animated favorites.
