Potential for Severe Thunderstorms Wednesday Afternoon

Powerful storms are forecast to hit New England Wednesday, and have the potential to impact the Watertown area. The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Wednesday, with a chance of severe thunderstorms hitting the area between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The storms may bring strong wind gusts that could cause damage, torrential downpours and localized flash flooding, and even the possibility of large hailstones falling. WBZ Channel 4’s forecast calls for the storms to mainly be north and west of the Boston in the afternoon, but the storm will likely move into the Boston area in the late afternoon and early evening.

String of Car Break-ins Reported in East Watertown

The Watertown Police Department responded to more than a dozen reports of vehicle that were broken into this week. The 13 break-ins occurred in the East End of Watertown during the overnight hours of Sunday, Aug. 18 into Monday, Aug. 19, according to Watertown Police Sgt. Thomas Grady.

Watertown Football’s 2019 Schedule Includes Thanksgiving Game

Watertown High School’s football season kicks off with some preseason games this week. In a few weeks the Watertown High School football team kicks off a season featuring at least four home games, including the annual Thanksgiving game, but their preseason slate begins this week. The Raiders come off their first losing season in several years. This fall Coach John Cacace’s team will look to erase the disappointment of a 4-7 record, which saw WHS miss the playoffs and lose to their archrivals, Belmont, after six straight wins. Watertown’s 2019 campaign begins with a non-league home game against Arlington Catholic on Sept.

Police Log: Woman Victimized in Computer Scam, Man Caught With Counterfeit Bill

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

Aug. 6, 10:33 a.m.: An officer spotted a GMC Savannah make and illegal turn so he stopped the driver. While speaking with the driver it was discovered that the man had a warrant for his arrest. The 65-year-old Revere man was arrested on the warrant from Lynn District Court for traffic offenses.

Proposed Marijuana Dispensary Holding Community Meeting

The group proposing to open a recreational marijuana dispensary in Watertown will be hosting a meeting to hear from the public. NS AJO Holdings, Inc., d/b/a Natural Selections will be hosting a required Community Outreach Meeting on the proposed Adult Use/Recreational Marijuana Facility at 23 Elm St. 

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in the third floor conference room in the Watertown Town Hall, 149 Main St., Watertown. Star Watertown Golfer Killed in WWII Will be Remembered, Again

Watertown’s Leo J. Martin was an outstanding amateur golfer in the 1930s and -40s, and died in World War II. A golf course in Weston was dedicated to him. In the late 1930s, a pair of twins from Watertown dominated amateur golf in Massachusetts, winning the state championship and other prestigious tournaments. The United States’ entry into World War II, however, put golf on pause and for one of the twins, Leo J. Martin, it was the end. He was killed in action.
