Watertown Middle School Students Collect Items for People Battling Opioid Addiction

Eighth graders at Watertown Middle School collected cold weather items for people overcoming addiction at a program at Mass. General Hospital. This was the first activity for the group working to help those trying to overcome addiction. In their first effort to help patients trying to overcome addiction, a group of Watertown Middle School students collected clothes and other items to help homeless people in need. Before winter break, a group fo WMS students held an ugly sweater party, to which they were asked to bring a new, cold weather item for a homeless adult in need, such as backpack, new socks, mittens, knit hat, or scarves, according to Watertown School Committee member Amy Donohue.

“Dancing With the Stars” Winner Teaching Class at Local Dance Studio

Tony Dovolani, a professional dancer who won “Dancing with the Stars” will teach a class at the local Fred Astaire Dance Studio. A winning dancer from Dancing with the Stars will make a special appearance at a local dance studio to teach ballroom dancing. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Tony Dovolani will be teaching a ballroom dance class at Fred Astaire studio in Cushing Square. The Belmont-based studio is owned by Watertown resident Elizabeth Woo.

As Construction of Arsenal Yards Rolls Ahead, Developers Switch Direction on Tallest Building

Boylston Properties seeks a tenant for this “prime spot.” As the new Arsenal Yards begins to take shape, developers have changed plans for the last building in the project, shifting the 130-foot Building G from condos to a lab and office building. In December, Boylston Properties withdrew a request to the Town to allow them to make Building G a 197 foot apartment tower, 67 feet higher than allowed by Watertown’s zoning rules. They will soon submit plans for a new building that they hope to lease to biotech companies.

Give Your Opinion About Parking in Watertown’s Business Districts

Town officials seek input about what changes should be made to parking in the Watertown Square and Coolidge Square areas. Residents, workers and others can share their thoughts in an online survey, or attend two upcoming open houses about the two areas. The Town of Watertown sent out the following announcement:

Watertown has begun a Parking Management Plan for Watertown Square and Coolidge Square. The goal is to support Watertown’s retail centers and make them more user friendly and welcoming. The Plan will describe current parking needs, supply, and usage.

Residents Excited About Concepts for New Schools at 2 of 3 Watertown Elementary Sites

The proposal to build a new building at Cunniff School would place the school on the side near the cemetery. On the right is a conceptual drawing of a floor plan for the second story. Wednesday night, the School Building Committee saw the first concepts for how new school buildings could fit onto two of the three Watertown elementary campuses, and the board and public, alike, responded enthusiastically. Project designers from Ai3 Architects presented the concepts they came up with for where a new school building would go on the Cunniff and Hosmer school sites, and showed what the planned renovation of Lowell School would look like. They were given the charge in December after the School Building Committee learned that the price difference for new schools would not be that much higher than doing wholesale renovations.

Traffic Stop Leads to Man Being Arrested on Drug Charges

A 63-year-old Winthrop man was arrested when police discovered items used for dealing drugs inside his vehicle after they pulled him over on Dec. 29, 2018. At about 10 p.m. on Dec. 29, a Watertown Police officer patrolling on the Westside spotted a man he knew to have a suspended license, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. The man, identified as Larry Lucchetti, was pulled over for driving with a suspended license.
