Perkins Library’s Recommended Reads for Changing Seasons

The season of the year can play an integral part of the mood or plot of some fiction. This Recommended Reads list features novels in which the seasons of the year play a large role and provide important background for the story. People’s personalities and issues can be strongly affected by the season and its associated weather events. One example is the novel Snow by Orhan Pamuk (DB 58863).

Watertown Cable Show Celebrate’s Cartoon Character’s 60th Birthday

Brutus, Popeye the Sailor’s rival, celebrates his 60th birthday, and Watertown Cable’s Drawing With Fred has a special tribute. The following announcement was provided by Fred Grandinetti:

Popeye’s rival for the affection of Olive Oyl, Brutus, celebrates his 60th birthday this month. To honor the occasion The Watertown Channel will be airing a special selection of Brutus’ best cartoons. The films were selected by Popeye historian and Watertown Resident Fred M. Grandinetti. 

Grandinetti said it wasn’t easy deciding which cartoons to select. “I finally went with the episodes featuring unique plots and good animation.”

MassBay College’ Nursing Program Ranked No. 1

MassBay Nursing students in the Nursing Skills Lab on our MassBay’s Framingham campus. The following information was provided by MassBay Community College:

MassBay Community College is pleased to announce it has been ranked as the #1 Practical Nursing (PN) Program in Massachusetts for 2020 by PracticalNursing.org, a nursing advocacy organization. In March, MassBay’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program was also ranked #1 for 2020 by RegisteredNursing.org. “MassBay has a long and proud tradition of educating the next generation of nurses who serve the MetroWest and Greater Boston area by providing the highest quality care to patients,” said MassBay President, Dr. David Podell. “We provide our students with comprehensive technical training and skills that prepare them for successful health care careers. We thank them for entering their careers at such a critical time and know they are well on their way to impacting the lives of their patients.”

PracticalNursing.org assessed MassBay’s Practical Nursing program on several factors, all of which represent how well a program supports students towards licensure and beyond.

See How to Apply for Watertown’s COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program

The Town of Watertown provided the following information:

The Watertown Housing Partnership has set up an Emergency Rental Assistance Program for Watertown renters who have lost income and are having trouble paying rent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This assistance is temporary and will provide assistance for up to three months to Watertown renters not receiving other government rental assistance and earning below 80% of Area Median Income. Assistance is for up to $750 for a 1-bedroom apartment, $950 for a 2-bedroom apartment, and $1,150 for a 3-bedroom apartment. Anyone interested in applying should contact Robyn Rufo at Metro West Collaborative directly for an application (robyn@metrowestcd.org or 617-923-3505 ext. 5). Applications are due to Metro West Collaborative by Thursday, September 24. For more details, see this flyer.

Health Department Reminder for Labor Day About Limits on Gatherings Due to COVID-19

The Watertown Health Department sent out the following announcement about Labor Day Gatherings and COVID-19:

As we are approaching the long weekend the Watertown Health Department would like to remind you of the guidance from the state regarding social gatherings and the importance of social distancing. For all gatherings there can only be eight people per 1,000 square feet with a maximum of 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors. Please remember to wash your hands often, wear face coverings, and maintain social distancing at all times. We are working together to stop the spread of COVID-19. Please remember that these guidelines are in place to protect each of us and our community.

The Hazards of “Chirping” in This Week’s Small Saves

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning, Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Parts of Common Street Closing for Paving Project

An illustration of the Common Street Reconstruction Project, including the roundabout at Orchard Street and a redesigned intersection at Spring Street. The Department of Public Works announced that sections of Common Street, including the rotary, will be closed while the final paving work is completed on the project. The Watertown DPW sent out the following announcement:

The Common Street project is scheduled to install top course paving on Common Street starting on Tuesday, September 8th. Work is anticipated to begin at Orchard Street and proceed towards Spring Street. To facilitate the paving, the roundabout and intersecting streets will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Arsenal Yards Starting Outdoor Fitness & Concert Series

In partnership with local Boston and Watertown fitness studios, Arsenal Yards is hosting a socially-distanced outdoor fitness series this month. Fitness classes are complimentary to guests and residents of Arsenal Yards, offering the chance to take a class with a favorite local fitness studio, or try something new! Outdoor fitness classes will run through Thursday, October 1,, 2020. Located on the River Green, across from Shake Shack, classes are complimentary and registration is required, with sign-ups opening the week before the class. Limited capacity available, and classes are weather-dependent.
