Watertown Scouts Running Food Drive for Local Food Pantry on Nov. 20

Troop 30Watertown Troop and Pack 30 will be collecting items for the Watertown Food Pantry on Nov. 20. The following announcement was provided by Troop 30:

Shopping for Thanksgiving? Put a few cans aside for the scouts, who are again running Watertown Food Pantry’s biggest food drive. 

On November 20 BSA scouts are collecting food for the Watertown food pantry. You can help by dropping off shelf-stable toiletries and food, noon-3 p.m., at 80 Mt.

Latest Details for Mt. Auburn St. Redesign Include “Road Diet,” Moving Bus Stops; Public Input Wanted

MassDOTCross sections of Mt. Auburn Street with the “road diet” that removes one lane of traffic each way and ads turn lanes and bike lanes. The redesign of one of Watertown’s major roadways will include some significant changes to the look of the road, as well as improvements that state officials said would improve the road for motorists, transit users, bicyclists and pedestrians. The repaving and improvement of Mt. Auburn Street has been discussed for many years and officially got started by Watertown officials in 2009.

Recreation Department Running December Vacation, Sports for Kids & Adults, Skiing & More

Sign ups have started for Watertown Recreation Department’s Winter Programs, which include a variety of programs for children and adults. The Rec Department will run a December Vacation program from Dec. 27-30 at Watertown Middle School for students in grades K-8. Sports programs are available for children and teens beginning at age 3 and running through high school. Some sports include basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, wrestling, as well as programs with a variety of sports.

The Unity Award is given each year at Watertown’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity Breakfast to honor individuals or groups who are making significant contributions to civic life in Watertown. We seek to honor community members who are furthering Dr. King’s vision of racial, social and economic justice in our community in concrete ways. We particularly encourage nominations of individuals and groups who identify as people of color or are led by people of color.

Watertown Salutes Veterans at Annual Breakfast, Veteran’s Agent Encourages Use of VA Benefits

Pagan, a Vietnam era veteran, is dressed in the Army infantry jungle fatigues worn during the Vietnam War. A group of veterans celebrated Veteran’s Day on Thursday at the annual breakfast, where Watertown Veterans Services Officer (VSO) Patrick George encouraged them to take advantage of the benefits they earned by serving their country. The event was held at the Charles Shutt Detachment, which is now home to both the Marine Corps League and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1105. “It’s good to see everyone again in person as we transition back to events where we can actually see each other again,” George said.

Dates of Watertown Winter Parking Ban Announced, See When it Begins

WINTER PARKING BAN 2021 – 2022

Watertown Chief of Police Michael P. Lawn has announced the 2021-2022 Winter Parking Ban dates. Effective Monday November 29, 2021 and continuing to April 1, 2022 the Winter Parking Ban will be in effect and strictly enforced. The regulation reads in part; “No vehicle may remain on any public way for more than one hour between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. all days of the week.” For residents who lack sufficient off-street parking, the Town allows for temporary parking at any municipal parking lot and other locations noted:

• The police station at 552 Main Street (visitor’s parking lot only)

• Any public school parking lot

• Marion Road parking lot at Victory Field

• O’Connell Park, (lot at the corner of Boylston Street and Mt Auburn Street)

• Grove Street parking lot at Filippello Park (No parking in the spaces along the driveway)

• 101 Morse Street – 14 spaces at the rear of the parking lot (currently being constructed, available once completed)

Please note that these locations may be used free of charge, however vehicles may only use available spaces after 7 p.m. and must be removed by 7 a.m. the following day.
