Watertown Hosting Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day

Watertown Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts fold a flag to be retired during the Flag Day Retirement of Colors Ceremony. Watertown will hold a Flag Retirement Service and Ceremony on Flag Day, announced Watertown Veterans Services Officer Patrick George. The ceremony will take place at Ridgelawn Cemetery on Friday June 14, 2019 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

“This event is open to the Public; and it would be an honor to have the residents of Watertown attend this very special event,” George said in the event announcement. If you have any questions, please call the Veterans Office at 617-972-6416.

Watertown Community Foundation Will Give Out Grants on June 5

Join Us for the Watertown Community Foundation 2019 Spring Grant Awards Reception on June 5, 2019 at 6 p.m. at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street. Free and Open to the Public

The Watertown Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $52,000 to initiatives in two categories:

One: WCF’s Program Grants awards grants designed to help organizations that serve Watertown develop new or continue existing programs with an educational focus (broadly defined). These are programs that operate outside of the Watertown’s public schools. 

Two: WCF’s Institutional Grants are designed to help institutions central to the Watertown community by providing funds to maintain critical programming and retain paid staff.  Grants under this program impose neither restrictions on the use of funds nor any program requirements.   

Eligible organizations apply for a maximum of $3000 for program grants and a maximum of $5000 for institutional grants.  All of the grants are funded by the Foundation’s Watertown Arsenal Education Fund.

Watertown Mall Offering Free Blood Pressure Screening

The following information was provided by the Watertown Mall:

Every first Friday of the month, the Watertown Mall hosts a free blood pressure screening from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. For this upcoming month, this will happen on June 7, 2019. The screenings are sponsored by the Watertown Health Department. Screenings take place in the back hallway of the mall, near Target & Carter’s. About the Watertown Mall:

The Watertown Mall is wheelchair accessible and accessible by MBTA Bus routes 70 and 70A. Plaque to be Installed in Watertown Park in Memory of Baby Who Died Unexpectedly

Watertown’s Casey Park on Watertown Street. The family of a young girl who died suddenly while at a local daycare center has donated a plaque that will be part of a memorial in a Watertown Park. Lia James Madigan was four months old when she passed away suddenly in September 2018. Last week, the Town Council accepted the donation, and read a proclamation in Lia’s memory. Her parents, Maile and Dan, donated a plaque to go next to a tree that has already been planted in Casey Park near the playground and baseball field.

Kayak on the Charles River with the Recreation Department

Kayakers will hit the Charles River June 15 in the annual event sponsored by the Watertown Recreation Department. Once again, the Watertown Recreation Department will hold its kayaking on the Charles River event, and sign ups are now available. Recreation Director Peter Centola sent out the following information:

Retiring Police Officer Had a Big Presence in the Community & in the Police Department

Officer Tony Physic on a visit to the Brigham House. Harold “Tony” Physic experienced a lot of lasts as a Watertown Police Officer recently: his last time judging the Dancing with the Stars earlier this month, the last time marching in the Memorial Day Parade on Monday, and on Wednesday his last roll call. After 34 years, Physic is retiring from the Watertown Police Department, having left his mark on his fellow police officers and the community that he served and protected. While he has patrolled many parts of town, for the last 15 years Physic was assigned to the dayshift patrol of the East End of town. “I’ve seen the community change and the people change,” Physic said, noting that the area used to be more of a family oriented neighborhood.
