Panel of News Outlets, Non-Profits Will Discuss How to Reach Older Adults

Groups looking to reach older adults in Watertown can attend a panel discussion hosted by the Marshall Home Fund in late October. The group provided the following announcement:

The Marshall Home Fund, a community-based charitable foundation benefiting Watertown residents age 55 and older, is sponsoring a free workshop for non-profits interested in promoting their services and programs to our dynamic community of older adults and exploring the challenges of reaching those who are isolated. A panel of experts representing local news media and organizations that serve our older adults will include the Council on Aging, Perkins School for the Blind, Springwell, Watertown News, Watertown Free Public Library, Watertown Tab, and the Watertown Housing Authority. They will exchange ideas, experiences, and insights to help non-profits increase their outreach to older adults. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct.

Conservation Commission Announces Winner of Faire on the Square Contest

The Watertown Conservation Commission would like to thank all who stopped by at our table to discuss the benefits of open space and our wetland resources. Thank you as well for those that participated in the True/False contest and for those who filled out our questionnaire regarding what residents think we should focus on besides are wetlands protection. Five entrants answered all of the True/False questions correctly. They are: Maxine Barrios, Kate Coyne, Michael Schade, Dave Harrison, and Peter DelTredici.

Flu Vaccines Available at Watertown Health Department Clinics

This Fall, the Watertown Health Department will run a series of flu vaccine clinics for Watertown residents. The 2019-20 Public Flu Clinics for Watertown Residents will be held at the Senior Center, the Library and the Police Station. Most are for anyone 6 months and older, but one is for those 55 and older. The Watertown Health Department will be offering influenza vaccine to all Watertown residents at the following locations:

Tuesday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Senior Center 31 Marshall St., for ages 55 and over

The season will end for the Watertown Farmers Market on Wednesday, but there are plenty of vendors to visit and special guests, including the Fire Department, the Watertown Library and a musician. The Watertown Farmers Market sent out the following announcement:

Construction at Watertown Library to Impact One Entrance

The Watertown Free Public Library announced that the rear entrance will be closed for several weeks due to a construction project. The Library provided the following announcement:

Beginning Tuesday, October 15 the rear entrance of the Watertown Free Public Library will be under construction. The library will remain open regular hours for the duration of the project, but the parking lot entrance will be closed for an estimated six weeks. During that time, patrons can enter the side door on Thaxter Street between the library and Town Hall, or use the Main St. entrance.

October Drive Collecting Items for Food Pantries in Watertown

Items collected for the Watertown Community Foundation’s food drive in January. The Foundation is organizing another one in the month of October. The Watertown Community Foundation will once again organize a food drive to collect items for the two food pantries in town at a time when donations are typically down. Items are being collected at the Watertown Public Schools, as well as the Watertown Police Station and Watertown Free Public Library and several local businesses. As we welcome a new Fall season, we also welcome two new members to the Council on Aging Board, Tom Lewis and Araxie Poladian.

Traffic and transportation are the biggest concern, according to a poll of attendees of the 2019 Watertown Faire on the Square, followed closely by development. At the 20th Faire on the Square, 25 people took the Watertown News Poll asking people about “what concerns you most in Watertown today?” People could check as many of the five categories as they wish, and could write in their own issue. The categories were: Schools, Development, Traffic/Transportation, Heroin/Opioids and Property Taxes.
