Big Crowds Come Out for 2019 Watertown Memorial Day Parade

Members of the Marine Corps League Charles Shutt Detachment march in the 2019 Watertown Memorial Day Parade. The streets of Watertown were lined with people waving flags, Monday, to pay tribute America’s fallen service men and women, and watch the 2019 Memorial Day Parade. The annual parade featured local veterans groups, scouts, Watertown Police and Firefighters, bands, military vehicles and much more. Close to 30 groups took part in the parade, with participants coming forward as late as Friday. Participants said the 2019 edition of the parade drew one of the largest crowds in years.

Teens for Trees Hosting Fundraiser at Branch Line

On Saturday, June 8th, from 1-3 p.m., Trees for Watertown will be holding a fundraiser for Teens for Trees on the patio at Branch Line at 321 Arsenal Street. There will be light snacks, raffle items from local businesses, and auction items, including art, tickets to a show at Mosesian Center, and more. And, of course, bocce ball! “We’re thrilled to be running Teens for Trees for the third summer in a row,” said David Meshoulam, Program Director. “Over the past 2 years we have worked with nearly 20 teens in learning about the importance of our urban forest.

Watertown Youth Coalition and Wayside Youth & Family Support Network’s Multi-Service Center invite nominations for our 2019 Community Spirit Awards and welcome the community to our annual awards event to appreciate and honor the individuals in the community committed to the health and well-being of Watertown’s youth and families. *Individuals eligible for nomination are those who have:

● Served as a positive influence or mentor to a Watertown Youth Coalition member or to others in the community

● Had the courage to address challenging issues that affect youth and thecommunity

● Not received an award in the past 5 years

Library Events: Talk on Controversial 19th Century Minister; Film Brings Women from Armenia, Turkey Together

The Rev. Mark Harris will speak about the Rev. John Weiss, a controversial minister in Watertown from the 19th Century. The Watertown Free Public Library will host a talk by the Rev. Mark Harris on a controversial 19th century minister, and a the screening of a film about women from Armenia and Turkey coming together to cook. The Watertown Library provided the following information:

John Weiss: Watertown’s Flame of Fire An Historical Lecture by Rev. Mark W. Harris

Called a “flame of fire” for his dramatic and prophetic style, the Rev. John Weiss was a controversial figure in 19th century Watertown. As a young minister, he was an outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery and resigned from Watertown’s First Parish Church because of his views. After a ministry in New Bedford, Weiss returned to Watertown and developed new religious philosophy of scientific naturalism.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club Raising Funds to Send Kids to Summer Camp

Watertown Boys & Girls Club campers hit the beach at Camp Hale, the club’s summer camp. The Watertown Boys & Girls Club has started a fund raising effort to make sure that all youth in the community will be able to attend summer camp. The Boys & Girls Club sent out the following information:

Give the gift of camp to a child in need. Be part of building great futures. Many of the youth who attend Watertown Boys & Girls Club for after-school programs, swim lessons, league sports teams, school vacation programs and summer camp, depends on the financial aid provided by the Club to be able to participate in these important youth experiences.

New Veterans Services Officer Hopes to Reach More Veterans, Brings in Variety of Experience

Watertown’s new Veterans Services Officer Patrick George, left, is pictured with Bill Byrne, Commandant of the Marine Corps League Shutt Detachment, and Mark Comeiro previous Watertown VSO and current Andover VSO. Watertown’s new Veterans Services Officer hopes to reach more former servicemen and women, both young and old, to make sure they are getting all the services they are entitled to for serving their country. Patrick George has been working in Watertown for just over two months, and is trying to get settled in Town Hall, and get to know local veterans groups, veterans in town and their families. He has already been busy. In May, he has already given his first budget presentation to the Town Council, helped get a memorial to a Watertown Marine killed in Vietnam approved, and will oversee the Memorial Day Parade for the first time.
