Watertown Residents Can Join Solar Discount Program

Watertown residents can participate in a program offering discounts on home solar systems.

Organizers sent out the following information:

From March 1, 2019, to July 31, 2019, Neighborhood Solar joins Watertown Faces Climate Change, a 350 node and a working group of Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment, Belmont goes Solar, Mothers Out Front, GreenCambridge, and 350-Cambridge, in offering the communities of Watertown, Belmont, and Cambridge a solar group purchase discount program. An all-volunteer program, Neighborhood Solar offers residents, businesses, and non-profits in Watertown, Belmont, and Cambridge a 20 percent discount on solar photovoltaics and a 14 percent discount on solar hot water. Its installers are SunBug Solar, a seven year-running Angie’s List Super Service Award winner, and New England Solar Hot Water. The offer is designed to take advantage of Massachusetts’ new SMART solar incentive program (photovoltaics), the Mass CEC rebates and Alternative Energy Certificates (solar hot water), the last year of the 30 percent federal tax credit, combined with the best solar prices and the best solar quality and craftsmanship. All evaluations and proposals are free.

Member of Watertown Scout Troop 30 Earns Rank of Eagle Scout

Luke Black, a member of the Watertown BSA troop and resident of Allston, has earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, a designation only 4 percent of Boy Scouts earn. Black, a Boy Scout from Allston, is the first Eagle Scout from BSA Troop 30 in a number of years. He achieved the Eagle Scout rank in February, after a board of review held by the BSA Sons of Liberty District. “I’m very proud and happy for Luke, reaching this highest rank scouting.” said Scoutmaster Chris Derocher.

The Registry of Motor Vehicles will offer a free workshop on license renewal and REAL ID for residents. Topics include: · What is the difference between “Standard ID” and “Real ID” driver’s licenses and ID cards; · How to renew a Massachusetts Driver’s License or Massachusetts Identification (ID) Card; and What are the new federal and state requirements for renewing a Driver’s License or ID card Staff from State Senator William Brownsberger’s office will be on hand to issue NEW MBTA Senior and Transportation Access Pass (TAP) CharlieCards, and to help with questions regarding the MBTA’s automated fare collection system. New cards will be processed for first-time Seniors (65 + with proof of age). Your new card will arrive by mail. This service was arranged through the office of State Senator William Brownsberger.

Free Blood Pressure Screening at Watertown Mall

Every first Friday of the month, the Watertown Mall hosts a free blood pressure screening from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. For this upcoming month, this will happen on March 1, 2019. The screenings are sponsored by the Watertown Health Department. Screenings take place in the back hallway of the mall, near Target & Carter’s. About the Watertown Mall:

The Watertown Mall is wheelchair accessible and accessible by MBTA Bus routes 70 and 70A.

Watertown Farmers Market Moving, Teaming with Summer Concerts

The Watertown Farmers Market will have a new home and new day in 2019. Warm weather will return in a few months, and with it the return of the Watertown Farmers Market. However, the market will have a new location and a new day, plus it will be teamed up with the Summer Concert Series for several weeks. Starting on June 12, and running through Oct. 9, the Watertown Farmers Market will be held on Wednesdays and will be located at Saltonstall Park in Watertown Square, next to Town Hall.

Nominations Sought for 2019 Watertown Historic Commission Awards

The Historic Commission sent out the following information:

Applications for nominations for the Watertown Historic Commission’s 2019 Historical Preservation Awards are now open. The Watertown Historical Commission Preservation Awards can be awarded to any individual, organization or project that has contributed to the preservation or recognition of Watertown’s Historic resources. 

There are seven award categories which a nominee may be considered.  The completed form is due in the Historical Commission office by April 3,  2019. Categories

1) The Richard E. Mastrangelo Memorial Award is given to any individual elected or employed by the Town of Watertown who has actively been a champion in supporting the preservation of a Historical Resource. 2) The Citizenship Award is given to any individual who has taken a leadership role in the effort to educate the community-at-large about local historical preservation issues or concerns. 3) The Community Spirit Award is given to any individual who has taken a leadership role in the advancement of appreciation for Watertown’s unique cultural make up.
