Mount Auburn Hospital Hosts Event on National Cancer Survivorship Day

Mount Auburn Hospital presents: Embracing Survivorship a free event celebrating National Cancer Survivorship Day on Sunday, June 3, 2018. The day will feature keynote speakers Ricardo Wellisch, MD, an internist affiliated with Mount Auburn Hospital and Corinne Zimmerman, Director of Museum Education at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum. Dr. Wellisch has been a primary care physician in practice for over twenty years and will speak about “Art is Healing.”

A light lunch will be provided followed by breakout sessions and concluding with a cancer survivor discussion panel. Breakout sessions topics include:

Meditation and Labyrinth Walking
Yoga
Session One: Chair yoga
Session Two: Gentle floor yoga
Knitting for Health
Reiki & Community Acupuncture (Ear Only)

Watertown Farmers Market Returns Soon With Extended Hours

The Watertown Farmers’ Market returns on June 7 and in 2018 they market will open earlier and go later. 

Once again, the Farmers’ Market will be held on the green at the Arsenal on the Charles (Corner of Arsenal Street and Kingsbury Avenue) in front of Panera Bread. The market will be open an extra hour — opening half an hour earlier and running half an hour later than last year. The market will features entertainment, and will have tables featuring community groups. Organizers seek more entertainers, community groups and would like volunteers (see details below). The market runs from June 7 to Oct.

Watertown Community Foundation Merging with Watertown Education Foundation

The following information was provided by the Watertown Community Foundation:

The Watertown Community Foundation and the Watertown Educational Foundation joined forces and cemented their two-year school grant partnership with a merger of the organizations in February 2018. Together, they combine over forty years of fundraising and grant making to the Watertown Public Schools. This official unification provides the Watertown school community a consolidated source of support for innovative educational programs and activities. The merged organization will continue to be known as the Watertown Community Foundation and the President of the Watertown Educational Foundation, Elaina Griffith, joined the board of the Watertown Community Foundation. “For the past two years, the Community Foundation and the Educational Foundation have run a combined school grants program.

Watertown-Based CatholicTV Network Wins Station of the Year Award

The CatholicTV Network is pleased to announce that it has been named Religious Television Station of the Year by the Gabriel Awards for the second consecutive year. The Gabriel Awards, established in 1965 by the Catholic Broadcasters Association, “recognize outstanding artistic achievement in a television or radio program or series which entertains and enriches with a true vision of humanity and a true vision of life.” This year marks the fourth overall time CatholicTV has won in the Religious Television Station of the Year category. “What a great honor it is to receive a Gabriel Award for Station of the Year. It is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of the staff of the CatholicTV Network and the continued support of our faith-filled viewers. We are humbled and appreciative that the committee chose CatholicTV, and it has certainly energized our staff to achieve more,” said Jay Fadden, Executive Vice President/General Manager of CatholicTV.

Registration Open for Cops & Rec Basketball, Hockey and Rock Climbing

Children can get to know members of the Watertown Police Department and have some fun during the Cops & Rec programs.

The Watertown Recreation and Police Department are collaborating to offer a summer basketball league. The general objectives of the program are to promote sportsmanship and teamwork in a fun and positive setting, while focusing on basketball fundamentals. There will be a girls league and a boys league.

Watertown High Grad Chosen to Conduct Research in Italy as a Fulbright Scholar

Watertown’s Francesca Korte will use her knowledge of biology and Italian, learned while studying at Wellesley College, and her experience working in medical labs to do research during her Fulbright Scholar year in Palermo, Italy. 

The 2014 Watertown High School graduate was one more than 1,900 Americans selected to be a Fulbright Scholar in the 2018-19 academic year. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. In Sicily, Korte will work on a project to evaluate the bioethics of the practices used to autopsy and identify migrants who die while crossing the Mediterranean from Africa to Italy. She will conduct her research at Università degli Studi di Palermo from October 2018 to July 2019. Her work will be supervised by Antonella Argo, MD, PhD. When Korte received word that her project had been chosen she had a mix of emotions.
