World War II Veteran Who Served on a Navy Destroyer Shares His Story with Watertown Cable

Watertown Cable host Bob Kaprielian recently spoke to a 92-year-old Navy veteran from Watertown for the cable show A Veteran’s Story. Watertown Cable Access TV sent out the following announcement:
Watertown Cable Access presents the story of Signal Man 2nd Class, Rick Erikson, a sailor aboard the USS Lewis Destroyer Escort who served in the Pacific during World War II. A resident of Stoneleigh Road in Watertown, Erikson remembers seeing the United States flag flying over Iwo Jima, one among the dwindling numbers who witnessed the flag. He recounts being in the typhoon that ravaged the U.S. Navy’s fleet off the coast of Okinawa and tells the story of the numerous kamikaze attacks that sank the destroyer just behind the USS Lewis in the picket line. Seaman second class Erikson is believed to be one of only four surviving shipmates on the USS Lewis.

Cooking Demonstration, Peaches & Compost Program at Watertown Farmers’ Market

The Watertown Farmers’ Market has cooking demonstrations, summer peaches and a chance to compost. The Watertown Farmers’ Market sent out the following information:

This week at the Watertown Farmers’ Market from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m., community chef Gaia Sciaranghella will be preparing Mushroom Bruschetta with ingredients from our farmers and vendors. In honor of the event, Spring Brook Farm will be selling cheese to top off this delicious and healthy meal! More information can be found below. Peaches made their appearance at the market last week.

Watertown Boys & Girls Club Receives Big Donation from Oakley Country Club

The Oakley Country Club announced it recently made a major contribution go the Watertown Boys & Girls Club:

We are excited to share that members of the Oakley Country Club made a donation of $43,334 to the Watertown Boys and Girls Club, which will help to fund their “Great Futures Campaign,” the reconstruction project for the organization that was founded in 1972. The gift was presented at a brief ceremony on July 17, 2018, at Oakley Country Club with Watertown Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Renee Gaudette. The proceeds were generate by private donations and the club’s popular “Casino Royale” fundraiser — a three-stage silent auction on April 28. “This event has become hugely popular with Oakley members, and it’s a great reminder of all the tremendous work that the Watertown Boys & Girls Club does in our communities,” said Oakley Country Club President John DeVito. “We’re thrilled that for the second year in a row this event was so successful, and that the partnership between our members and the Boys & Girls Club is so strong.”

Accountant from Watertown Honored by American Institute of CPAs

Leanna M. Polidoro, CPA was one of 41 CPAs from across the U.S. honored by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) as a member of the Leadership Academy’s 10th graduating class. Polidoro was selected based on her exceptional leadership skills and professional experience for the four-day Leadership Academy program, which will be held from October 7-11 in Durham, N.C.
Polidoro, a Watertown resident, is a manager at Matrix Financial, LLC in Wellesley, MA, where she provides tax planning, consulting and compliance services to high-net-worth individuals and closely held businesses. Her areas of expertise include partnership, S Corporation and individual taxation, with a subspecialty in both commercial and residential real estate. Polidoro is an active member of the AICPA and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA). She sits on the Board of the Accounting Advisory Council at Western New England University.

The Watertown Mall, located at 550 Arsenal Street, Watertown, will be hosting the New England Aquarium for their “Whale Day” event on Tuesday, July 31, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Visit the Watertown Mall for their “Whale Day” event, sponsored by the New England Aquarium. The event will be taking place on July 31, 2018 from 11:00 to 2:00. A great program for families, Whale Day allows children to learn about whales and other ocean life and participate in fun activities, such as a whale feeding simulation and a whale species matching game.

Signing of First Treaty Made by U.S., Reading of Declaration of Independence Celebrated in Watertown

The Historical Society of Watertown commemorated two important moments in the history of the Town, the state and the nation during the annual Treaty Day on July 14. During the ceremony, the Historical Society held a reenactment of the first reading of the Declaration of Independence in Massachusetts, and also remembered the first treaty signed by the recently formed United States. Both events took place at the Edmund Fowle House, the meeting place of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress during the first year of the Revolutionary War. Members of the Historical Society reenacted the reading of the Declaration of Independence, which was done from the second floor window of the house on Marshall Street. The first reading took place on July 18, 1776.
