Watertown Library Awarded National Digital Literacy Grant

Watertown LibraryThe Watertown Free Public Library. The following announcement was provided by the Watertown Library:

The Watertown Free Public Library (WFPL) is among over 160 public libraries nationwide awarded funding by the Public Library Association (PLA) to conduct digital literacy workshops. The PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive, supported by AT&T, provides support to libraries of all sizes to conduct digital literacy training in their communities and help close the digital divide. WFPL will use these funds to bring digital literacy training into community spaces around Watertown. Workshops have already been scheduled with the Watertown Housing Authority and others will be coordinated in the coming months.

Zine Fest Returns to Watertown Library in October, See Details

Why would a public library host a Zine Fest? “Because zines amplify voices that need to be heard” says Watertown librarian and Zine Fest founder Carey Conkey-Finn. “I really believe these little handmade magazines can change the way people think about libraries, publishing, and information. Plus…they are just cool!”

On October 15, 2022, The Watertown Free Public Library (WFPL) will host the 2nd annual Watertown Zine Fest. Zines are small-batch, hand-made publications that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and formats.

Watertown Church Hosting Justice & Faith Film Series

The following announcement was provided by the series organizers:

A free, public film series on “Justice & Faith” will be offered this fall at the Watertown Free Public Library. The series is sponsored by the Church of the Good Shepherd, Watertown’s Episcopal parish. The three films will focus on Dorothy Day, the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, and the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Each film will be followed by an interactive discussion on justice and faith in the lives of the subjects, facilitated by the Rev. Andrew Goldhor. The following films will be shown on Sundays at 2 p.m.: 

October 2: “Revolution of the Heart: The Dorothy Day Story” traces Day’s journey from a young journalist, to a Catholic convert, to the co-founder of The Catholic Worker newspaper and the first “houses of hospitality,” which sheltered New York City’s homeless during the Great Depression.

Photographer’s Images from Afghanistan in 1976 to be Displayed at Watertown Library

“Father & Daughter, Afghanistan, 1976.” by Joseph Flack Weiler, is one of the images that will be on display at the Watertown Library. “Faces of Afghanistan, 1976,” which showcases the photography of Watertown resident Joseph Flack Weiler, will be on show at the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main St., from Oct. 2 to 30, 2022. Weiler sent out the following information about the exhibit:

I used 35mm Nikon-F cameras with Kodak Tri-X film.

“Meet” John Adams at Event Hosted by the Historical Society

George Adams will recreate President John Adams during an event hosted by the Historical Society of Watertown. The following announcement was provided by the Historical Society of Watertown:

The Historical Society of Watertown and The Watertown Free Public Library present “Meet John Adams — A Lively and Revolutionary Conversation with the Second President” on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022 at 2 p.m.

The event will be at the Watertown Free Public Library’s Watertown Savings Bank Room, 123 Main St., Watertown. Join the Historical Society of Watertown & the Watertown Free Public Library for a live presentation by George Baker portraying John Adams, dressed as the Second President of the United States 1797-1801. John Adams talks about his life and times in a humorous and inspiring performance and discusses many incidents in his life.

Watertown Students Create 9/11 Tribute With Help of Public

Students from the Watertown Middle School’s Project 351 Team created a tribute to the Massachusetts residents lost on 9/11. A colorful arrangement of rocks sits in front of the Watertown Free Public Library, with each rock representing one of the 206 Massachusetts residents who lost their lives in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The installation was created by a group of Watertown students, who got a hand from the public, said Montserrat Llacuna, a freshman at Watertown High School who led the Middle School’s Project351 Watertown Team to create the tribute. Each of the 206 rocks were painted an have messages of hope, courage and support.
