A night of comedy and fun will be hosted by the AOH Div. 14 Club in Watertown. The night will feature hypnotist Derrick Watkins and comedians Jeff Koen and Paul Nardizzi. The event will be on Friday, Sept.
James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.” DeMarco recently added “Here’s Trouble” to his cartooning lineup, inspired by drawings he did in the 1980s when he was in high school.

Revels seeks a diverse and talented volunteer chorus of adults and children to join us onstage for 15 performances of The Christmas Revels at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, MA.

Please join the Lit Squad as part of the Watertown Arts Market on August 21, 12:00-5:00 PM, at Arsenal Park. We are a newly gathered group of published and amateur writers, young and forever-young, who want to encourage and foster poetry and all literary arts here in this diverse community. Join us to market your work, perform your work, enjoy the work of others … and meet other writers during the course of the day. We will have a commission-free sales table for your books and related wares. We will have featured 10-minute readings by established Watertown poets, followed by 3-5-minute open-mike readings by all comers, with a PA system and chairs, at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
A new gallery in a Watertown apartment complex will feature art from nearly a dozen artists, and proceeds from the show will benefit children’s cancer research and veterans with PTSD. Art Saint Hope is the brainchild of Shamere Ross, the lead technician at Elan Union Market apartments, who wanted to give artists an opportunity to showcase their work and raise money for charity. Money raised will go to St. Jude’s Hospital, which does children’s cancer research, and Camp Hope for soldiers returning from war who are going through PTSD. “It is special because it not only raises money for these two great initiatives, but it also helps struggling artist who are not able to show and sell works at many other popular galleries.
Music lovers will have not just one but two concerts to attend this week in Watertown’s Saltonstall Park Concerts. The regularly scheduled Compaq Big Band, with vocalists Ed Scheer from The Love Dogs, will play on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m. The band has been around for 46 years, and the 2021 edition includes a 19-piece band. The music ranges from Big Band legends such as Glenn Miller, to classics from Frank Sinatra, Billie Holliday and others, and hits through the years up to today. Artists featured in latest show at Storefront Art Projects will host a reception on Thursday, Aug. 5. The show features pieces from Gateway Arts, a Brookline-based gallery and workshop for adult artists with disabilities. The masked reception will be hosted by Storefront Art Project at the gallery located at 83 Spring St., Watertown from 7 p.m to 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 5.
James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and had a love of cartooning. He started drawing Small Saves in 1991, which features another of his loves — hockey. Recently, DeMarco debuted a new comic strip featuring a cat named Trouble. “The cartoon is about a little kitty named ‘Trouble.’ The cartoon actually originates from my high school days back in the early ’80s,” DeMarco said.
