Learn Self Defense at the Watertown Free Public Library

The following information was provided by the Watertown Free Public Library:
The Watertown Library will host a free self-defense class on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Watertown Savings Bank Room. The class is and open to the public. Registration required. We’ll cover some basic self-defense skills, how to lower your victim profile and increase your situational awareness.

Candlelight Vigil Planned to Remember Those Lost to Drug Overdoses

Watertown Overcoming Addictions’ 4th annual Candlelight Vigil will take place Nov. 7, 2018 at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 212 Main St., Watertown, in the Lower Hall. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States

More teens die from prescription drugs than heroin and cocaine combined

Watertown Art Exhibit Receives an Award from the Sasaki Foundation

Watertown-based Sasaki Foundation presented its inaugural design awards, including an exhibit at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. One of the awards went to an art exhibit, with a curator’s talk and panel discussion at Mosesian Center for the Arts. “Please Touch the Art” is a tactile art exhibit and companion humanities exhibit accompanied by a curator’s talk and panel discussion at the Mosesian Center for the Arts. The exhibit will provide a multi-sensory art experience that is accessible to all audiences, taking special care to provide an immersive, tactile experience for visually impaired community members. Blind scholar and More than Meets the Eye, What Blindness Brings to Art author Georgina Kleege will guest curate.

Improbable Players Presenting Play on Opioid Addiction at Mosesian Center

Watertown-based Improbable Players will be presenting a show at the Mosesian Center for the Arts showing how people got started using opioids. The Improbable Players provided the following information:

Program contains talk of drug use. In 2014 Improbable Players created a theatre piece to show how people got started with opioids.

Historical Society of Watertown Hosting Tours of the Edmund Fowle House

The Historical Society of Watertown announced it will host tours of the historic Edmund Fowle House, which features two exhibits. 

The Historical Society provided the following announcement:

Tours of the 1772 Edmund Fowle House, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 28 Marshall St., Watertown. Hosted by the Historical Society of Watertown, with the last tour at 3:15 p.m.

Adults: $5; Students/Seniors: $3. Visitors can also view two free exhibits: “Watertown and the Civil War” and “A Mi’Kmaw Woman’s Award Winning Legacy.”

Family Mental Health Support Group Meeting at Newton Wellesley Hospital

The National Alliance for Mental Illness provided the following announcement:
Family Mental Health support group: NAMI Family Mental Health Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for the families of individuals living with mental illness.  
A support group will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 7-9 p.m. at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, at 2014 Washington St. in Newton 02461, on the second floor of the main building in the Bowles Conference Center. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

community. Thousands of artists, patrons, students and guests visit MCA every week. Reliable volunteers are an important element in the center’s success throughout the year. There are a variety of volunteer positions available: Ushers, classroom assistants and greeters. Volunteers will be trained in their responsibilities and will be eligible to earn volunteer credits that can be applied to a class or ticket purchase (Mosesian productions only).
