Local Yoga Studio Celebrating First Anniversary with Free Classes

Simply Yoga will celebrate its one year anniversary with a day of free yoga classes. Located in Cushing Square in Belmont, and owned by Watertown’s Stephanie Mills, the studio has a line up of classes for people to check out. Simply Yoga sent out the following announcement:

Mount Auburn Hospital Holding Fall Prevention, Management Workshop

Mount Auburn Hospital Presents A Matter of Balance Falls Prevention Workshop

8 week class starts Friday, May 5

WHAT:  Many older adults are concerned about falling and, as a result restrict their activities. Mount Auburn Hospital recognizes this concern and offers, a customized program to help patients prevent and manage their falls, while staying or becoming more active. Beginning in May, the hospital is pleased to present the A Matter of Balance workshop, an eight-week group focused on learning to view falls as controllable. Participants will set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and learn exercises to increase strength and balance. This program will teach practical strategies to manage falls.

DPW Hosting Styrofoam Recycling Event, Not All Items Will be Taken

Once again, the Watertown Department of Public Works will host a styrofoam recycling event, but there are some changes to what types of styrofoam will be accepted. The DPW put out the following announcement:

Significant Changes in the Collection of Styrofoam! Most polystyrene products are currently not recycled due to the lack of incentive to invest in the compactors and logistical systems required. Due to the low density of polystyrene foam, it is not economical to collect. However, if the waste material goes through an initial compaction process, the material changes density and becomes a recyclable commodity of high value for producers of recycled plastic pellets.

Independent Autopsy of Aaron Hernandez Performed in Watertown

The independent autopsy of Aaron Hernandez, which ruled his death was a suicide, took place at Watertown’s Faggas Funeral Home. The autopsy was conducted by medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden, the former chief forensic pathologist for the New York State Police, according to WHDH Channel 7. Baden has been involved in other high profile cases, including testifying in the O.J. Simpson murder trial and performing an independent autopsy on Michael Brown, the teenager shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Hernandez, the former New England Patriot and convicted murderer, was found dead in his jail cell on Wednesday. His attorneys requested an independent autopsy.

Conference for Women Over 50 Born from Website Co-Founded by Watertown Woman

The fourth annual She Did It conference, which features workshops that take on issues important to women over 5o, will be held in Wellesley in May and was the brainchild of a Watertown woman and her friend from Newton. Watertown’s Felice Shapiro founded BetterAfter50.com and very early on she was introduced to Ronna Benjamin of Newton, who would become her co-founder and co-publisher. BetterAfter50.com tackles the issues women of that age group face. Shapiro said they can often be major life changes, such as looking for a new career or getting back into the workforce after raising children, life after divorce or keeping a first marriage strong. “I am very much a She Did It story,” Shapiro said.

Watertown’s Canino Inducted into Westfield State’s Criminal Justice Hall of Fame

Town native and Watertown High School graduate Carlos Canino was honored by his alma mater – Westfield State College – for his accomplishments in criminal justice and on the athletic field. Canino currently works as the Deputy Assistant Director Field Operations for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, after a long career with the agency. He also was a standout in football at Westfield state. Canino be inducted in to the WSC Criminal Justice Hall of Fame along with fellow 1988 Westfield graduate Cheryl Bassett. Westfield State sent out the following announcement before the event:
Former Westfield State University athletic standouts Carlos Canino ’88 and Cheryl Bassett ’88 will be inducted into the school’s criminal justice Hall of Fame on April 5.

Watertown Rotary Club Holds Wine Tasting at Plumbing Museum

Dozens gathered at the Plumbing Museum for the Rotary Club of Watertown’s Wine Tasting Fundraiser. The event raised $6,500 before expenses, said Rotary President Lilia Weisfeldt. The money will go toward the charitable causes supported by Watertown Rotary. From 2006 to 2016 the club handed out more than $300,000 to causes in the community, including:
