Residents Invited to Attend Armenian Genocide Commemoration at State House

Each April for the past 32 years, members of the Armenian community along with state legislators and guests have come together at the State House to commemorate the Armenian Genocide. This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with the commemoration taking place on Friday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the House Chamber with a program of speakers, music, and honorees, announced State Sen. Will Brownsberger’s office. Following the ceremony, a reception provided by Ani Catering of Belmont will be held in the Hall of Flags. The event recognizes the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923 by the Ottoman Turkish government. This is an opportunity for survivors and Armenian-American descendants to demonstrate their commitment to preserving their culture, religion, and language; working for humanitarian projects and awareness; and striving for recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Still Time to Sign Up for the Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K Race

The fourth annual Watertown Police Department Finish Strong 5K race will be held on April 30, and there is still time to sign up. The WPD put out the following announcement:

We cordially invite you to participate in the 4th annual Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K road race and walk. This event will support the Watertown Police Relief Committee and the Watertown Police Supervisors Association. The Watertown Police Relief Association was organized in 1936 and changed to the Watertown Police Relief Committee in 2008. Our membership is comprised of sworn personnel, regardless of rank, as well as all retired officers.

Kids Can Register for Summer Vacation Garden School in Watertown

Registration is now open for Vacation Garden School, which takes place in August at Church of the Good Shepherd. The church sent out the following announcement:

We hope you can join us for our sixth summer of fun, wonder, and learning about water, soil, seeds, animals, and harvest! VGS 2017 will be August 7-11 at Church of the Good Shepherd. Our purpose is to inspire wonder at the good earth and help children claim their role as stewards of it. We draw on themes and stories from scripture and thank God for our blessings, but we are not evangelical and are open to families of all faiths and no faith.

Registration Open for Watertown’s Pequossette Summer Program

The Watertown Recreation Department is offering the Pequossette Summer Program to children who are entering grades 1 through 8 in the fall of 2017. The program consists of eight individual weeks from June 27 through August 18, 2017 at the Hosmer School at 1 Concord Road in Watertown. The program will operate Monday through Friday from 8:45 am to 2:30 pm, except for the first 2 weeks. We offer an early drop off from 7:30 am to 8:45 am and an extended day program from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The Hosmer School and O’Connell Playground, which includes a large field space, playground area, basketball court, tennis court and a multi-purpose court, afford the Recreation Department the opportunity to offer a wide range of activities to entertain the children.

Watertown Farmers Market Opening in June Under New Management

The Town of Watertown, in collaboration with Live Well Watertown (LWW), is excited to announce that it has assumed management of the Watertown Farmers Market, which is generously sponsored by athenahealth. The Watertown Farmers Market was established in 2014 and run by Relish Management through 2016, with funding support from athenahealth. The Town and LWW thank the Relish partners for opening a Farmers Market in Watertown and providing a community marketplace with a variety of fresh produce, farm, and specialty products. The Farmers Market is a natural link to LWW’s mission of promoting healthy and active living through its community partnerships and educational programs. LWW efforts include strengthening access to local, healthy foods and connecting people to community resources and opportunities that can improve quality of life. LWW’s longest running program, Eat Well Watertown, teaches people how to select a variety of seasonal and locally grown foods and prepare healthy, multicultural dishes.
