Watertown Savings Bank Seeks Entries to High School Photography Contest

Watertown Savings Bank (WSB) announced it is seeking submissions for their Annual High School Photography contest. If you are a high school student who lives or attends school in Arlington, Belmont, Lexington, Newton, Waltham, and Watertown you are eligible to participate. The twelve winning photographs will be published in the bank’s 2018 calendar, which is distributed free to thousands of WSB customers and community members annually. WSB is looking for photos that depict scenes from the local community. Entries must be submitted by Sunday, April 16 th at midnight.

Two Mental Illness Support Group Meetings for Family, Caregivers

Mental Illness support group:  NAMI Family Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness.  

A support group will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 7:30-9 p.m. at Newton Wellesley Hospital’s main building at 2014 Washington Street in Newton, on the second floor of the Bowles Conference Center. A support group will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 7:30-9 p.m. in the Board Room of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church at 207 Washington Street in Wellesley. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

The Watertown Community Gardens has plots available, and applications are now being accepted. The organization has had a garden on Grove Street for several years and last year opened up one in Arsenal Park. Sign Up for the 4th Annual Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K

The Watertown Police Department will host their fourth annual 5K road race and walk in April, and you can sign up now. The WPD put out the following announcement:

We cordially invite you to participate in the 4th annual Watertown Police Finish Strong 5K road race and walk. This event will support the Watertown Police Relief Committee and the Watertown Police Supervisors Association. The Watertown Police Relief Association was organized in 1936 and changed to the Watertown Police Relief Committee in 2008. Our membership is comprised of sworn personnel, regardless of rank, as well as all retired officers.

The Watertown Senior Center has plenty of events during the month of March. Spring is in the Air! Spring arrives on March 20 and all of us at the Senior Center are looking forward to warmer temperatures and brighter days. Whether you have visited the Center for a senior parking permit, income tax assistance, the drop-in art class on Mondays with Dawn Scaltreto, a movie on Thursdays, an exercise, yoga, or tai chi class, line dancing, a festive party, SHINE appointment or informative lecture, we are always happy to see you. The March calendar includes the first in a new series of Lunch and Learn events.

Watertown Basketball Players Named Middlesex League Boys, Girls MVPs

Watertown swept the top honors of the Middlesex League basketball post-season awards, claiming the MVP for both the boys and girls. The Middlesex League coaches voted junior John Korte and senior Shannon Murphy as Most Valuable Players of Middlesex League Freedom. The Raiders also got other spots on the Middlesex All-Stars. Junior Julio Fulcar made the boys team, while junior Cali McMahon was named to the girls All-Stars. Both squads begin State Tournament play this week.

Recreation Department Announces Hours for Victory Field, Others Closed

Recreation Department Director Peter Centola sent out the following information about when the Victory Field Turf will be open to the public. Please enjoy the beautiful weather and utilize the Victory Artificial Field according to the following schedule:

Today, Friday February 24 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday, February 25 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, February 25 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Depending on the weather, the Turf Field will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. moving forward. For future planning, the school department will begin their athletic program on Monday, March 20 and they will utilize the turf most of the time. Please remember, when a permit is issued, no other use with be permitted by any individual or group. Grass Fields

Local Groups to Hold Rally to Support Immigrants, Refugees in Watertown

Several Watertown groups will be hosting vigil and community forum supporting immigrants and refugees in town this weekend. Organizers sent out the following announcement:
Please join us for a very special event on Sunday, February 26. Watertown Welcomes Immigrants is a community event to demonstrate support for immigrants and refugees living in Watertown. There will be a Vigil from 3:00-3:45 p.m. in Watertown Square. Please bring signs that express your support for immigrants and refugees in Watertown, in Massachusetts and in the country.
