Watertown Rotary Club Celebrates its 92nd Birthday

The Rotary Club of Watertown celebrated its 92 birthday this week. Members of the service organization marked the occasion at their weekly meeting, Tuesday, which was held at the Residence Inn by Marriott on Arsenal Street, said Rotary President Lilia Weisfeldt. “We’re looking pretty good for 92, don’t cha think?!” Weisfeldt said. Group Meeting to Discuss Noise from Airplanes from Logan Airport

Residents can come discuss the impact of noise from airplanes over Watertown at an upcoming meeting of the Boston West Fair Skies group. Organizers sent out the following information:

Boston West Fair Skies (BWFS) will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, January 25 in Winchester. BWFS works towards redistributing airplane noise more fairly among our communities. Wednesday, January 25th, 2017, 7-8:30 p.m., Winchester Public Library, 80 Washington St. Winchester

We are a citizens grassroots organization which includes Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Medford, Somerville, Watertown and Winchester – all communities affected by the increased airplane noise due to the implementation of 33L RNAV (using GPS) departures at Boston Logan Airport.

Adult Mental Health First Aid Training Course Being Offered in Watertown

The Wayside Multi-Service Center will be putting on a number of upcoming mental health first aid trainings, including one in Watertown. One of the four is the Mental Health First Aid training for adults, which is offered less frequently, said Wayside Prevention Program Coordinator Stephanie Sunderland-Ramsey. The adult mental health first aid course takes place Saturday, Jan. 28, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Watertown Police Department Community Room, 552 Main St. in Watertown.

Pedestrian Bridge Over Charles River in Watertown Being Replaced

The Joseph Thompson Pedestrian Bridge over the Charles River, west of Watertown Square, is out of commission for a while as the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) constructs a new span. 

The new bridge will be less sloped than the present one, so that it meets ADA accessibility requirements, according to the DCR. Construction will be completed by the end of 2017, depending on weather and other factors, a DCR release said. The final work may not be finished until the spring of 2018. The total cost of the project will be $1.5 million, which includes fabricating a new bridge, remove the old bridge and construct a new supporting substructure elements – such as footings, abutments, and retaining walls.

Career Fair for Women, Girls Interested in Working in the Construction Trades

The Massachusetts Girls in Trades will hold a Construction Trades Career Fair for Women on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Wynn Boston Harbor Construction Office at 3 Charlton Street in Everett from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Light refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by Wynn Boston Harbor and Suffolk Construction. The building trades are actively seeking women who are graduates of career and technical (vocational) programs in areas such as carpentry, bricklaying, floor covering, painting, iron working, and many others. This career fair is an excellent opportunity to explore high-wage, high-skill careers in union construction.

Unity Breakfast Speaker says the Challenges MLK Fought Continue Today

So many people came out to the annual Unity Breakfast on Monday that extra tables were needed to squeeze in all the people wanting to celebrate the life’s work of Martin Luther King Jr., and make sure his message remains strong today. The 17th annual Unity Breakfast was sponsored by the World in Watertown and held at the Hellenic Cultural Center. While the focus was on King and his work on the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s, Keynote speaker Geraldine Hines pointed to similar issues that have come back to light in 2017. Hines has served as an associate justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court since 2014, and she has been a judge since 2001. She said her views of the role of the law in spreading civil rights has changed.

The Watertown Community Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Cathy Berkley as its new Executive Director. Cathy brings more than three decades of management experience in social service, education, government and non-profit, as well as large businesses. She is a passionate believer in the power of small groups of people to build and sustain healthy, vibrant communities. Prior to moving to Watertown, Cathy was Executive Director of the Crisis Call Center of Reno, Nevada, a 24-hour, 7 day, 365 days a year operation providing safe and compassionate support for individuals in any type of crisis. Cathy previously managed Senior Services for Santa Fe County, N.M., and has served on the Board of Directors of several nonprofit organizations involving health, education and community institutions in New Mexico, Colorado and California.
