Young Basketball Players Return to Summer Camp for First Time in Years

Charlie BreitroseYoung basketball players attended a camp run by Watertown High School coaches and players this week. School might be out, but the gyms at Watertown High School and Watertown Middle School have been full of youngsters this week. They joined WHS’s basketball coaches for a week-long basketball camp, and there is another program next week. The summer basketball camps have been around for many years, said Watertown boys basketball coach Steve Harrington, who runs it along with Watertown girls basketball coach Pat Ferdinand. The program has been on hiatus for a few years.

Watertown’s Abbi Peterson Heading to NCAA D3 Track Championships

Bridgewater State AthleticsWatertown High grad Abbi Peterson earned Athlete of the Week honors and will be competing in the NCAA Div. III Nationals. The following announcement was provided by Bridgewater State Athletics:

For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University junior Abbi Peterson has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. A native of Watertown, Peterson captured top honors in the high jump last week at the MIT Final Qualifier as she posted a mark of five feet, 4.25 inches (1.63 meters). Bridgewater State AthleticsHigh jumper Abbi Peterson has won the MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week six times over the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Watertown’s Andrade Will Play Div. I College Football at ACC School

Charlie BreitroseWatertown’s Mason Andrade booked a spot on the Wake Forest football team as a running back next fall. Watertown High School football standout Mason Andrade will be headed to play in the ACC next fall after being offered a spot on the Wake Forest football team. The senior rushed for 1,575 yards in the fall, was named the Middlesex League MVP, and made the Boston Globe’s All-Scholastic team. While it looked like he was going to play at an NCAA Div. II school in Massachusetts, he able to get a spot on a Div.

Watertown Basketball Player Named to Herald’s All-Scholastic Team

Charlie BreitroseWatertown senior Adam Patterson made the Boston Herald’s All-Scholastic team. He is pictured dribbling the ball up court in the MIAA Div. 3 Final Four game against Tech Boston in the MIAA Div. 3 Final Four. Adam Patterson helped Watertown High School make the 2022 boys basketball State Final, and his play on the court earned him a spot on the Boston Herald’s All-Scholastic team.

Watertown Runner One of Fastest Women in 2022 Boston Marathon, See How Other Locals Fared

A Watertown woman finished among the top female runners in the 2022 Boston Marathon. She was one of more than a dozen runners to run the race on Patriots Day

Elaina Tabb finished 16th in the women’s race with a time of 2:31:34. She was also the 174th fastest runner, overall. In 2021, Tabb finished 12th in the women’s race. The fastest male runner from Watertown was Matthew Farkas, who finished 346th in the men’s race, and 368th overall.

Hall of Fame Hockey Coach, Watertown Native Jerry York Retires from BC

Boston College AthleticsBoston College men’s hockey coach Jerry York, a Watertown native, announced his retirement on April 13, 2022. Here he lifts the NCAA Championship trophy in 2010. He won five titles in his career. After coaching for half a century, the last 28 years at Boston College, Watertown’s Jerry York announced his retirement. The Hall of Fame coach is the winningest coach in NCAA hockey history.

Watertown’s Lauren Kelly Brings Cup Home After Winning Women’s Pro Hockey Title

Boston PrideWatertown’s Lauren Kelly, right, celebrates after winning the Isobel Cup with the Boston Pride. It was the second straight title for the women’s professional hockey team. Watertown Middle School students greeted staff member Lauren Kelly with a big sign last week, and she brought along a great item for show-and-tell: the Isobel Cup, awarded to the team that wins the Premier Hockey Federation championship. Kelly, who works with autistic students in the Connections Program at WMS during the day, plays defense for the Boston Pride on nights and weekends. The women’s professional hockey team recently traveled to Tampa, Fla., for the Isobel Cup Playoffs, and came home champs after winning three straight games.

Magical Run to the Garden Ends Just Short of Title for Watertown Boys Hockey Team

BOSTON — The Watertown High School boys hockey team made all the right moves on the way to the TD Garden, and the Raiders looked like they might have one last magical moment to clinch the MIAA Div. 4 State Championship. In the second overtime, however, it was Sandwich that found the puck magic, prevailing 3-2. Coming inches short of the school’s second state championship is not bad for a team that basically didn’t exist five years ago.
