Applications Available for 2019 Watertown Healthy Grants

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) announces the release of the Fall 2019 Healthy Watertown Grants to support organizations that work to create new or existing programs to keep our community healthy. A total of $10,000 will be distributed through these health grants. Past Healthy Grant awardees have included: Local food pantries; nutrition and meal programs for school age children and seniors; programs and services fostering healthy aging; mental health first aid training for first responders; programs designed to combat the opioid crisis and provide services and supports for individuals and families struggling with substance use disorders; and health-related programs for infants and their families. Eligible organizations may apply for a maximum of $2500. The average amount awarded will range from $500 to $2500.

The Watertown Mall and the Watertown Health Department are partnering up for a flu clinic at the mall on Friday, Nov. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. This two-hour long event will be held in the back hallway of the mall, near Target and is free for all customers over six months old.

New Technology Added to Children’s Room at Watertown Library

Libraries are vital access points for technology in any community, and the Watertown Free Public Library is no exception. Recently, the WFPL Children’s Room has made some changes to technology offerings that fit perfectly with the library’s mission to “connect people to ideas, information, education, creative opportunities, and each other.”

In September, the Children’s Room began lending Launchpads for in-library use. These are small, portable touchscreen tablets pre-loaded with early learning games and puzzles that feature everything from farm animals, dinosaurs, and the human body to favorite characters like Rescue Bots and My Little Pony.

Run the Boston Marathon for the West Suburban YMCA

Apply by November 10, 2019

The City of Newton has provided the West Suburban YMCA with one official bib number for the 2020 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20, 2020. The Y is seeking one dedicated runner to lace up and raise $7500 for the West Suburban YMCA. Runner will receive a free membership to the Y while training, support for fundraising, team apparel and more. Deadline to apply for the bib number is November 10. Group Raising Money to Provide Dogs to Veterans with PTSD

The Order of AHEPA, Local Chapter #406 will be hosting a dinner dance fundraiser for the Service Dogs for Warriors program at Watertown’s Hellenic Cultural Center. The money will be donated to AHEPA’s program to train PTSD dogs to help veterans. “A specially trained PTSD dog can provide a sense of security, calming effects, and physical exercise that can make a positive difference in the life of those that suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder,” the event announcement said. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at the Taxarchae/Archangels Hellenic Cultural Center, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown.

The Watertown Farmers’ Market is over for the season, let the organizers know what you thought about this year’s market. The Watertown Farmers Market has ended for the season, and organizers want to hear from attendees. They have created a short online survey to provided feedback. The 2019 market moved to a new location and a new day in 2019. It was held in Saltonstall Park, near Town Hall, on Wednesdays, and also coincided with the Watertown Summer Concern Series.
