A group advocating for the care of street trees in Watertown seeks teens to take part in a summer program. The program director of Teens for Trees, David Meshoulam provided the following information:

Items from Watertown’s Former Museum of Magic to be Sold at Auction

The sign at the former Magic Art Studio on Spring Street in Watertown. A small museum of memorabilia, books and other items related to magic and magicians was located for years in a storefront on Spring Street in Watertown. This month, items from the Mini-Museum of Art will be sold at auction. The Magic Art Studio, run by Ray Goulet, has closed and items will be sold at an auction in Chicago, but bids can also be submitted online or by phone, according to the Potter & Potter Auctions website. “The sale features the collection of Ray Goulet, a beloved collector, publisher, producer, performer, and friend to all magicians,” according to a story on Finebooksmagazine.com.

Cub Scouts from Around the Area to Compete at Pinewood Derby in Watertown

The Watertown Mall provided the following information:

Join the Watertown Mall & 19 Cub Scout Packs for fun and racing for the annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. Cub Scouts, in grades K–5, have crafted miniature wooden cars from a handful of materials. From shaping and designing the bodies of the car to installing wheels and adding weights, these creative minds put endless amounts of hard work into perfecting their cars – and they did it by themselves. The event is sponsored by The Sons of Liberty District of the Spirit of Adventure Council. Cub Scouts in this district come from Waltham, Belmont, Watertown, Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington, Medford, Malden, Everett, Chelsea, Revere, & Melrose.

Former Watertown Police Chief Honored for Work After Marathon Bombings

Former Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau received an award for his work after the Boston Marathon Bombings. Here he spoke with the Town Council. Former Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau received an award from the Heather Abbott Foundation for his work after the Boston Marathon Bombings in 2013. Deveau received the Helping Hand award at a banquet on Sunday hosted by the foundation. The award is presented “to somebody who has made a big impact on the foundation.”

The Heather Abbott Foundation helps provide customized prostheses to those who have suffered limb loss through traumatic circumstances, according to its website.

See When You Can Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste

The Town of Watertown is pleased to announce the 2019 schedule for collection of Household Hazardous Waste Products. As in the past years, the collection will take place at the Minuteman Household Hazardous Products Facility at 60 Hartwell Avenue, Lexington from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following dates (which are Saturdays unless otherwise indicated):

• April 20th• May 18th• June 15th• July 20th• August 17th• September 15th (this is a SUNDAY)• October 19th• November 2nd

This event is free of charge to Watertown residents. Advanced registration is not required; Watertown residents must have an identification or utility bill displaying your Watertown address to dispose of materials at a collection event. Acceptable and unacceptable materials: Certain materials are not accepted as household hazardous waste at the collection event. Forty Runners from Watertown Entering the 2019 Boston Marathon

The 123rd Boston Marathon will include 40 runners from Watertown. The number of local entrants is up one from last year. The highpoint for local runners came in 2014, the year after the Boston Marathon Bombings, when Watertown had 72 entrants. Books, Media on Armenian History & Culture Featured at Nearby Library

During April 2019 the Belmont Public Library is displaying a selection of books, DVDs, and CDs on the Armenian Genocide and Armenian history and culture. Library Director Peter Struzziero and his staff facilitated the display whose items can be borrowed by patrons. 

The display has so far included The History of the Armenian Genocide by Vahakn Dadrian; Killing Orders by Taner Akçam; Architects of Denial, a film by Dean Cain and Montel Williams; Armenia, the Survival of a Nation by Christopher Walker; Tadem, My Father’s Village by Robert Aram Kaloosdian; Neither to Laugh nor to Weep by Abraham and Vartan Hartunian (the latter was a minister in Belmont); Goodbye, Antouraby Karnig Panian; Treasures from the Ark: 1700 Years of Armenian Christian Art by Vrej Nersessian; Komitas-Aslamazian, a CD by the Chilingarian Quartet; Armenian Folk Arts, Culture, and Identity by Levon Abrahamian and Nancy & Sam Sweezy; The History of Armenia by Simon Payaslian; The Kingdom of Armenia by M. Chahin; Armenia and Karabagh Travel Guide by Matthew Karanian; The Forty Days of Musa Dagh by Franz Werfel; The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian; and other titles. As items are borrowed, additional ones are added. A group of local Armenian Americans conceived the display for Armenian Genocide Commemoration Month. They suggested nearly 40 titles available in the Minuteman Library Network on topics and genres such as the Genocide, history, religion, art, music, film, food, travel, and fiction.
