Watertown’s Armenian Memorial Church Hosts Annual Fair

The Armenian Memorial Church of Watertown will hold its Annual Fair on Friday, May 29, from 5-8 p.m., and on Sat., May 30 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. The public is invited to attend. The fair features fabulous beef, chicken, and losh (ground meat) kebab dinners complete with sauce, rice pilaf, salad, and pita bread. A selection of Armenian vegetarian meals will also be available. Church volunteers are known for their fine cooking and have been preparing  and many other homemade baked goods, including Armenian delicacies of cheoreg, mante, paklava, kadayif, and beureg will be available, too. The Annual Fair will also feature a sale of household items at bargain prices and a variety of vendor tables.

Tufts Foundation Seeks Applications for Policy and Advocacy Grants

The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is accepting Letters of Intent for its Policy and Advocacy cycle of community investments. The deadline for applications is Monday, July 20, 2015 at 4 p.m. Upon review, select applicants will be invited to submit full proposals by Monday, September 21, 2015. If awarded, grants will run from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2016. To build healthy and age-friendly communities, engaging in policy and advocacy are essential strategies. The Foundation is looking for ideas that will move communities toward a comprehensive approach to community development that includes “domains” or arenas reflected in the WHO model for creating age-friendly communities.

Watertown Community Foundation Seeks Paid High School Interns

The Watertown Community Foundation will pay high school students to have summer internships, and the deadline is coming soon! The Watertown Community Foundation sent out the following information:

Wanted: High School Students for Paid Summer Internships! The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) is providing four high school students who live in Watertown with the opportunity to have a paid summer internship with a local organization or company of their choice. This should help open doors for students to pursue opportunities with a variety of businesses, organizations, or agencies. It is a great way for high school kids to explore a career field of interest.

All veteran organizations and parade participants should report to Mark Comeiro, Watertown Veterans Services Officer, between 10:30-11 a.m. at the Tufts Health Care parking lot on Arlington & Grove Streets to form for the parade. The parade will start promptly at noon and proceed down Mt. Auburn Street to Main Street ending at Saltonstall Park with a brief service.

Watertown Library Hosting Free Bicycle Maintenance Workshop

The Watertown Free Public Library invites bicyclists to come in for a workshop on the basics of bicycle maintenance. 

The workshop will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2015, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the library’s Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room. Galen Mook from Landry’s Bicycles will lead the a hands-on bike maintenance workshop. He’ll focus on the ABC’s of bike maintenance – the Air, Brakes, and Chain – to keep your bike safe and smooth all season long! Bring your bike and he’ll diagnose issues and guide you through the fix. The class is limited to 25 adults (and their bikes).

Panel: Tough Love Can Help Addict Come to Grips with Their Illness

Addiction to heroin and other opioids has risen in New England, and with tragic results, including in Watertown. Thursday night, a panel of people looking to help people overcome substance abuse shared their knowledge, including one sentiment that all agreed – tough parenting can help addicts get the treatment they need. Those who attended the event, “Watertown Community Drug Education,”at Watertown Middle School, heard powerful personal testimonies of those who have overcome addition and parents of addicts in recovery. Watertown resident Chris Thigpen, and Northeast Region business development director for the Benchmark Recovery Center, organized the event to share his knowledge as an addict in longterm recovery about what it takes to overcome addition. Opioid addiction has risen at an alarming race in Watertown, with fatal consequences, said Watertown Police Lt. Daniel Unsworth.

Watertown Library Hosting 5K Run & Walk – Find Out How to Sign Up

The second annual Watertown Free Public Library 5K will be held on May 31! The run and walk begins at 10:15 a.m. and will be fun for the whole family. The event benefits the Watertown Library. “Together we’ll run through Watertown’s beautiful neighborhoods. Participants of all ability levels are encouraged to participate,” the race announcement reads.
