The annual Walk for Hunger will wind through the Boston area, including a section in Watertown on Sunday, May 3 – see how it will impact your day. Thousands of people will take part in the 47th annual Walk For Hunger. The 20-mile walk benefits Project Bread and raises awareness about the issue of hunger. The Project Bread website says: “The Walk brings together people from many different communities and cultures – and attracts parents, kids, students, and corporations. But everyone comes to offer hope to hungry people and to support Project Bread’s fresh approach to ending hunger: programs that help to provide sustainable access to healthy, nutritious food to those in need.

Community Drug Education Day Coming to Watertown

Watertown will host an evening called “One Community Working Together to Make a Difference” to educate people about helping family and friends battle drug addiction. The Watertown Public Schools, the Watertown Police Department and Learn to Cope are combining to present the free Community Drug Education event on Thursday, May 7 from 6-8 p.m. at the Watertown Middle School Auditorium. The keynote speaker will be Chris Thigpen who will speak about “Family Intervention”

See How Local, National Media Covered the Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide has been the focus of local and national coverage today, with stories of survivors, calls for the United States to officiall recognize the Genocide and a history of Armenians in Watertown. National Public Radio’s WBUR did a piece about Watertown’s Armenian residents, who make up the third largest concentration of Armenian’s in the United States. Reporter Bruce Gellerman went to the monthly gathering at St. James’ Armenian cultural center, and talked to local resident about the meaning of the Genocide. 100th Anniversary of Armenian Genocide to be Commemorated in Boston

Armenians around the world will mark the 100th anniversary of one of the 20th Centuries biggest tragedies and one that still has important significance in the Armenian culture – the Armenian Genocide. An array of events will be held in Boston on Thursday and Friday and will be attended by many in Watertown. Buses will be traveling to the ceremonies from Armenian churches in town. The following announcement was sent out by the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of America – Eastern Region:

The centennial of the Armenian Genocide, considered the first genocide of the 20th century, will be commemorated during two days of public events in Boston on Thursday and Friday, April 23-24, 2015. With these events, Armenians honor the memory of the one and a half million who were killed, and the legacy of those who survived.

Register for Summer Basketball, Summer Recreation Programs

The Watertown Recreation Department is holding sign ups for the men’s Summer Basketball Leagues and summer youth programs.

The Watertown Recreation Department Men’s Basketball League begins on May 26 and teams are asked to sign up this week. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. in the same location. This is a mandatory meeting to attend. In addition to some discussion of rules and regulations, the deposit must be provided. The League will begin on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

Find Out How the 2015 Boston Marathon Could Impact Your Day

Get ready for the 2015 Boston Marathon! Even if you are not running or watching in person, your driving or public transportation plans may be impacted. The following streets in Newton will be closed due from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to the 119th running of the Boston Marathon, according to Newton Police:

Commonwealth Avenue from the Boston line to Washington Street
Washington Street from Commonwealth Avenue to Beacon Street
Washington Street from Beacon Street to the Wellesley line
College Road between Commonwealth Avenue and Hammond

In addition, Homer Street between Commonwealth Avenue and Walnut Street, Walnut Street between Commonwealth Avenue and Homer Street, Cummings Road and North Street will be a Police Security Zone and will be open to abutters only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Newton Police said. Many streets in Boston will be closed during the race, including Commonwealth Avenue, Beacon Street and Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton which will close at 8:30 a.m. For full details of street closings and parking restrictions click here. Most of the T system will run on a regular weekday schedule, but some MBTA routes will be impacted – mostly during the time of the Marathon.

Watertown Residents Invited to Join Mother’s Day Walk for Peace

On Sunday, May 10, Watertown citizens are invited to walk with others from across greater Boston in support of the Mothers’ Day Walk for Peace in Dorchester. Now in its 19th year, the walk was founded by Tina Chery, whose son, Louis, was killed in 1993 on his way to an after-school Christmas party for Teens Against Gang Violence. Proceeds from the walk will benefit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute (www.ldbpeaceinstitute.org), which provides support to bereaved families, and serves as a model for peace education in Boston. Watertown neighbors and community organizations are invited to join in this 3.6 mile walk. A bus will be leaving from the First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 10.

Watertown Senior Center Needs Items for Giant Indoor Yard Sale

The Watertown Senior Center’s Giant Indoor Yard Sale is back and they seek items to be donated. 

The yard sale is Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Watertown Senior Center, 31 Marshall St. Admission is only 25 cents and all proceeds will benefit the Senior Center. The Senior Center needs your donations of toys, books, costume jewelry, kitchen items, etc. (please, no clothes, shoes, tools or electronics). Bring donations to the Senior Center starting Monday, April 28, between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
