Police Log: Deliver Man Caught Stealing Package, Home Ransacked

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

July 7, 1:36 a.m.: Police received a report of a person sleeping behind a shed at an apartment complex on Mt. Auburn Street. Officers encountered the man who said he had missed the bus to get home to Belmont. Police found he had two warrants: one from Malden District Court for driving under the influence of alcohol, and one from Salem District Court for defrauding a restaurant.

The Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Watertown Fire Department limit open burning for public health and safety reasons. Per MassDEP open burning is prohibited in 22 densely built and populated cities and towns. THE FOLLOWING ARE COMMUNITIES WHERE OPEN BURNING IS PROHIBITED AT ALL TIMES: Arlington, Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Chicopee, Everett, Fall River, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Malden, Medford, New Bedford, Newton, Somerville, Springfield, Waltham, Watertown, West Springfield, Worcester. Watertown is one of 22 communities in the Commonwealth in which open burning is NOT PERMITTED.

Two Alarm Fire Starts on Grill, Damages Back of Watertown Home

A fire charred the back of a home on Waverley Avenue Wednesday afternoon and displaced three residents. A fire alarm was struck Wednesday afternoon for a home on Waverley Avenue. When firefighters arrived Deputy Fire Chief Tom McManus, the incident commander, ordered a second alarm. The fire reportedly started on a grill and extended to the house and spread rapidly up the rear of the home. Engine 3 arrived and was alerted to the blaze by one of the residents, said Acting Fire Chief Ryan Nicholson.

Police Log: Man Wields Knife at Co-Workers, 2 Scooters Stolen

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

June 28, 9:05 a.m.: Police checked the property in the Watertown Square Plaza on Mt. Auburn St., where Dunkin’ Donuts is located, after the property owner said homeless people had been seen camping and loitering there. Officers spotted man in a back alley on the property. They discovered he had six warrants for his arrest out of Waltham District Court for trespassing.

Police Log: Man Caught Wandering Around Construction Site, Juveniles Vandalize Signs in Parking Lot

June 23, 5:02 a.m.: A worker at a construction site on Arsenal Street spotted a man walking around inside the fence who did not appear to belong. Police were called and when they spoke to the man he said that he was fixing the fence. Officers confirmed that he did not work there, and there were numerous “no trespassing” signs. At first the man provided a false name and date of birth.

Watertown Public Safety Announcement: Please leave fireworks to the professionals this summer! 

Massachusetts Fireworks Law MGL Chapter 148, S. 39

It is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. • Fine for possession or use of fireworks between $10-$100

• Up to a $1,000 fine for the sale of fireworks

Fireworks (including sparklers) are not safe, especially around children. Sparklers burn at temperatures of over 1,800° Fahrenheit! 

Children under age 5 are likely to suffer the worst burn injuries caused by sparklers. We need your help to prevent unnecessary injuries, house fires, property damage, and traumatic experiences for many children, pets, active military, veterans, and other residents. Registration Open for Middlesex Sheriff’s Youth Public Safety Academy

Children interact with local first responders during the Middlesex Sheriff’s Youth Public Safety Academy. The following information was provided by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office:

Registration for the 2022 Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA) has opened and a limited number of spots remain available for youngsters between the ages of 8-12. Following two years of virtual sessions, YPSA will return in-person on July 11 and run through the first week of August. Due to continuing COVID-related considerations, restrictions and requirements, this year’s YPSA will contain some changes, including a reduction in the total number of cadets that will be able to attend. The camp has also been shortened from six weeks to four. “We’re excited to welcome cadets, their families and our public safety partners back for another tremendous summer of YPSA,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.

Police Log: Man Arrested for Driving Recklessly, Safe Stolen from Home

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

June 13, 3:34 p.m.: A car was forced into a parked car by another driver, who fled the area. A Honda SUV was driving east on North Beacon Street near the Toyota dealership. A Volkswagen tried to pass her and went over the double yellow line. Another vehicle was coming the other direction, so the VW swerved back and collided with the Honda, forcing it into a parked Lexus sedan.
