Jeffrey Herbin will take part in A Shot for Life Gauntlet. Watertown High School basketball player Jeffrey Herbin will be participating in a 24-hour basketball marathon to raise money to fight cancer. Herbin seeks to raise $1,000 towards A Shot for Life’s $100,000 fundraising goal for 2023. He will participate in the the A Shot For Life Gauntlet on Nov. 11 at the Starland Sportsplex in Hanover.

Members of the Donohue’s Kaos Club posed triumphantly with the championship trophy Tuesday night after capturing the Watertown Summer Basketball League championship, defeating the squad that won the title last year. The league has been operating in Watertown for six decades, most of which were played in the outdoor court in Saltonstall Park next to the Watertown Boys & Girls Club. Donohue’s Kaos Club defeated New Day 67-49 in Game 3 of the Papas Elite League Finals. New Day forced the deciding third game by winning Game 2 in overtime on Aug.

Number 2 seed and defending champion New Day forced a deciding Game 3 to even the 2023 Watertown Recreation Summer Basketball League Championship series following a 62-54 comeback, victory in overtime over top seed Donohue’s Kaos Club. Trailing by six, 27-21, at halftime, New Day went on an extended run midway through the second half. Stonehill graduate Andre Tongo was the spark in New Day’s comeback, dropping 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half. Amherst’s Johnny McCarthy followed up with 12 points, while Akeem Williams rounded out the trio in double figures with 10 points.

The top-seeded Donohue’s Kaos Club proved why they were the number one seed, opening the 2023 Watertown Papas Elite Men’s Basketball League Championship Finals with a 67-49 win over New Day. Donohue’s carries the 1-0 series advantage into game two of the best of three Championship Finals. Dartmouth College alum Miles Wright was red-hot from the perimeter, scoring 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half to give Donohue’s the 33-16 lead at half-time.

A pair of teams won their quarterfinal matchups in Watertown’s Papas Elite Summer Basketball League, and will play in the semifinals beginning Wednesday, Aug. 9. The league features teams made up of current and former college basketball players, and is hosted by the Watertown Recreation Department.

Leaving a community that has grown to be like family will be difficult, said Watertown Girls Basketball Coach Patrick Ferdinand, but he is taking a job as boys coach closer to his home which will allow him to spend more time with his wife and daughter. After more than a dozen years leading the Raiders girls team, Ferdinand announced this week that he will be taking the job as coach of the Framingham High School boys basketball team. “It’s a major change, from Division 3 to Division 1 and girls to boys,” Ferdinand said.

When the Watertown Youth Girls Softball Under 12 team entered their new division last spring the season was all about learning the game and trying out positions. For this past season, the girls had come into their own and really took on a different kind of mentality, said coach Nicole Keuchkarian. “I saw the girls before my eyes unite as a team. And everyone sacrificed their own wants for what was best for the team.

NANTUCKET — Few road games require multiple modes of transportation, but Watertown High School’s girls lacrosse team hade to take two buses and a ferry to make it to the MIAA Div. 4 Tournament game against Nantucket. The 20th seed Watertown (9-13) lost 14-5 to fourth seed Nantucket (19-3) on June 8. Sophomore Alani Garey scored three goals for the Raiders, while junior Sarah Morrissey and senior captain Alex Karalis each contributed one.
