Wayside Running 5K4Kids Fundraiser, Find Out How to Register to Run or Donate

The Wayside Multi-Service Center, based in Watertown, will be participating in a 5K walk and run to raise money to provide services to the community. The organization sent out the following information:

Wayside Multi-Service Center in Watertown promotes mental and emotional health by providing opportunities for youth to develop strong, positive relationships with caring adults. What we raise will go towards supporting:

The Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leadership Program where high school youth work on projects to promote positive coping skills, mental health and wellness, and youth substance use prevention, though projects such as our Address the Stress Instagram Campaign (https://www.instagram.com/w2b2youthwellnesscollaborative/).The Social Services Resource Specialist Program provides a central access point to connect residents to vital social services including fuel, food, housing and counseling resources.Counseling is provided for young people and their families who need support dealing with a variety of mental health needs.Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid Trainings are offered to enable adults to help adolescents or adults experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.Enrichment Programming and Outreach in Public Housing where children participate in weekly after school activities including creative arts, cooking and community service projects. After a year off due to the pandemic, the annual celebration returned to Watertown in 2021. Jennifer KavanaughMany of the dozens of candidates running for office in Watertown this fall had booths at the Faire. A variety of bands performed on the Main Stage.

In the first of three candidate forums for the Watertown Election, the candidates for Councilor At-Large will be appearing live at the virtual event on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.

The forum will be broadcast live on Watertown Cable Access TV, and also the public can join on Zoom. It is co-hosted by Watertown News and Watertown Cable. The moderator will be Jim Vershbow, co-anchor of the Watertown Weekly News on Watertown Cable. The Councilors At-Large are elected by the entire town.

Family & Friends Celebrate Memory of Girl Who Built Strong Friendships, Inspired People in Her Lifetime

Charlie BreitroseFriends of Lora Karaguesian sit on the Buddy Bench at Hosmer School dedicated in her memory. Watertown’s Lora Karaguesian’s life was cut short, but in her 11 years she made many close friendships and lasting memories. Recently, her family and friends gathered to remember her big smile and bright personality, and leave a lasting memorial at her old elementary school. On Sept. 18, a bench with a plaque in Lora’s memory was dedicated by more than 30 family members and friends.

WHERE: Stop & Shop Watertown Stores at 700 Pleasant Street and 171 Watertown Street 

WHAT: Stop & Shop is inviting the local community to celebrate the start of fall with a fun BBQ taking place outside of both of its Watertown stores on 700 Pleasant Street and 171 Watertown Street. Customers can also enjoy entertainment including face painting and a DJ along with a prize wheel to win products and reusable bags. In addition, both stores are introducing grocery Pickup service to provide residents with a more efficient and convenient way to shop.

The End of An Era: Russo’s Closes for the Last Time, Thanks for the Memories

Charlie BreitroseShoppers enjoyed the last days of Russo’s before it closed for good on Sept. 18. Several years ago, when my wife and I had dinner with some of our friends, we discussed one of the hypothetical situations: would you want to know that you are about to eat the best meal in your life, with the catch that no other meal would ever rise to that level. That question came to mind for me recently as I realized that the last days of Russo’s market were approaching. Tucked away on one end of town, I used to think of the store as one of those hidden gems that make Watertown so special.

UPDATED: Several Flu Clinics Being Offered by Watertown Health Department

The Watertown Health Department will be running a series of flu clinics in September and October. The flu vaccine is available even to those without insurance. If you are insured, please remember to bring all your insurance and Medicare cards with you for billing purposes where applicable. If you know of anyone who is homebound and unable to attend one of our clinics please call 617-972-6446 and speak to the Public Health Nurse. The Watertown Health Department will be offering influenza vaccine to all Watertown residents at the following locations:
